could use a little advice

Hey guys, I bought an 86 savage a few months back as my first bike, it ran great besides the backfiring until about a month ago, it start backfiring and making that awful firecracker sound. I eventually got it home after a series of taking things off and putting them back on. After that scare I changed my spark plug and half ass cleaned my carb, it ran alright for a little while but the backfiring got serious every so often until one day I barely made it home after a terrible round of backfiring and the bike shut off a few times, I had to keep the rpm's high and the choke on, I now have the carburetor in pieces on my porch and it looks too clean. I've heard the stock petcock that comes with the old savages cause symptoms similar to a carb problem, can someone tell me exactly what kind I need and where to find it? And any other advice if I'm missing something, its much appreciated.
