50 mph buck
08/20/13 at 19:45:09

I posted this once and got some good insight; although, I'm still having some problems so I thought I would try one more time.  When I get above 50 mph the front end starts to vibrate or even buck.  The faster you go the worse it gets.  Sometimes it doesn't do it, but it happens quite often.  A friend who is a mechanic looked at it and can't figure it out.  He said it the steering column bearings were loose so he tightened them up.  Now it only pulls to one side or another.  He said the forks look good, new tires, tubes, everything looks in good condition.  If you can offer some insight please do.  Best regards.

Did he happen to check fluid level and spring conditions in the fork tubes? Axle bearings?

Front wheel running true, as in no loose or broken spokes?

And just for giggles, check the back wheel, bearings spokes and alignment. Oh, and the swingarm bushings or bearings, whatever they stuffed in them on the line that day.

A problem in the rear of the bike can manifest itself up front.

Thanks WD, much appreciated.

From what I know:

Axle bearings - should be good and greased
Forks - not sure, plenty of pressure, travel feels normal, not leaking oil
Alignment - should be good, reputable shop put on tires
Spokes - don't know
Bushings - no idea

I will pass on those thoughts.  He still has the bike for a bit longer.

Thanks again, best regards.

is the tyre (tire) mounted on the bead the whole way around? Sometimes the tyre fitters don't pay enough attention and the bead of the tyre stays down on part of the circumference. So the tyre has a low spot that humps each time it goes around. If so, you can re seat the tyre properly by letting it deflate, smear a bunch of dish liquid, coconut oil or brake fluid (my fave) into the bead area then inflate the bejeezus out of it til the tyre pops up onto the bead all the way.

Unfortunately, it has done this before the tire change and It seems to get worse with time.  Everyone, thanks for your insight.

I know why you two have so many posts... but I take a lot of time off from here, get annoyed and disappear for months or longer at a time.

The bucking started long before the tire change.  I have been refurbishing my 06 with a number of corrections.  Basic stuff, just trying to keep it stock and running well.  I have fixed a number of items; although, this one has been causing me some headaches.  My friend who is a professional mechanic and is working on it.  He works on machinery, cars, so fourth.  He can usually figure anything out in no time and he is a bit stumped.  I will take all of your suggestions into advisement.  I appreciate your insight and if you have any other thoughts please let me know.  Best regards.

Do you happen to have a wind screen on this bike? The reason I ask is that I had a nasty buck/wobble when I hit about 50. Then I adjusted the screen and the wobble stopped.

JOG, I think I hear you clucking.  I believe you want me to test the circucmference of the outer-surface of the tire for any abnormalities as it turns.  Is that correct?  This should be satisfactory.  When I had the tire put on it was very close to fender.  The tire ended up being much thicker than I thought it would be.  So much in fact I had to adjust the fender from the back bolts to pull the front of it up just a bit.
Regarding the windshield, I am curious about your experiences gmonster.  I took mine off once to see what it be like to have all that free air hit you.  It hit me bit harder than I expected.  I went about a 100 yards and thought I really need that thing back on.  Regardless, the shimy / buck was reduced to a bare minimum.  With the windshield on sometimes it bucks so hard it is inconceivable that a stock windshield could cause that much discourse.  If it were the windshield I would be likely to believe I would have read a number of posts concerning that issue.  I sure the windshield extenuates the root core problem.
Thanks again, please feel free to add any thoughts
