will older triple tree/fork tubes work with 2006?
08/16/13 at 09:20:24

Due to running head on into a parked car (a family member was driving) I have bent fork tubes on my 2006.  The tubes, alas, are kinked, so I don't think they could be rolled out.  The only thing that seems to be wrong is the bent tubes, bent right below the triple tree.  New replacement tubes are exorbitantly expensive, so I'm looking to replace with used.  Used (in nice condition) aren't real easy to come by (unless I want to wait a while).  I've seen some older ones listed in the Marketplace.  So my questions are:
  • From how old of a Savage would the triple tree & fork tubes work ("plug & play?) on a 2006?
  • From how old of a Savage would just the tubes from the fork be compatible with the 2006?
  • If I had just the inner tubes, how tricky is it to replace just the inner tubes and keep all the other hardware from the 2006 (this is probably my preferred option if it is not too difficult)?

Thanks.

I am not sure the exact year of the switch - but the lower fork tubes were changed somewhere around 2004 to include a little plastic guard that sticks up in front ot the fork tube.  I am not sure how productive this thing is in doing anything.......but that is the only difference I am aware of.  The early foks, or fork tubes should interchange.

If you want to be sure....you can check part numbers by going online and looking at different years amd seeing if the part number changes.

Good forks and fork tubes are somewhat limited.....it appears most of the bikes on eBay that are from bike dismantlers have been involved in front end crashes.

Interchangeable from day one up. Just swap your fender and brakes to the new set.

The little plastic guards are just "fluff" they are too small to do much.

If it was my bike, it would be springer time. Perfect excuse, the forks you have are toast. Or get extended tubes from Seeger, stock or extended tubes from Forking by Frank.

If you need tubes, triple trees, etc, I believe I have spares.

Do you want trees + tubes ?
I will check this evening or in the morning and get some photo's so you can see them.
Unless I have deceived myself I have everything, including the front axle, and new bearings for the tree as well.
I may even have a wheel but not sure of that.
What about the brake system ?

Does that sound like fun ??    Cool

@LANCER
Thanks for checking.  All I need are the tubes.  I may be interested in the front wheel or perhaps just the front rim, depending on condition.  I haven't had a chance to put the bike up on a jack stand so I haven't been able to see how true the front wheel is.  Visually it looks fine but there is one section where the mating between the tire and the rim looks a little different, so I might want to replace the wheel just in case.  (I'm willing to lace up a new rim  to the existing hub/spokes).

oops, oh yeah, I should have mentioned that the brake is fine (it was, shall we say, "unused" during the incident in question, hence the incident)

Sounds like that rim would fix real easy.
