question about jetting ( sorry for once again)
08/14/13 at 07:53:26

Hi.
I am sorry for a new topic but i really need help more quick or i am getting to hammer my savage.
So problem is that i cant get right jetting carburettor always is big PUFF when shut down engine.
I changed original muffler with one of silvertail for savage. Then i ordered jetting set from Sigma, telling that all is stock except muffler. So they send me set, with several main jet needles and only one pilot and it is 57.5.
But in meanwhile i had problem with blue smoke and i had to change piston, so i drilled cylinder for once bigger piston ( i hope you understand). I rejett carburettor , i put main 150 and pilot 57.5 no problem while driving just big PUFF at shut down engine.
Then i read here that it could help to put pilot 55, but i dont have that one. ( original main jet needle is 130 and pilot 47.5)
so i then did again, i keep 150 main and i put back pilot 47.5 but it is same thing. PUFF at end.
Mixture screw doesnt help.
my question is do i can put main needle 155 and pilot 57.5. Does increase of size main needle can do something, as i have only pilot of 57.5.
Thank you for help
and sorry for my bad english

Perhaps hammer self for choice of muffler.

Not familiar with silvertails, but if it's an open pipe, it will be difficult to tune.

main jet won't have an effect on shutdown bang, only the pilot jet does.

I would adjust for good driving and use technique to help with shutdown.
try pulling the choke before shutting down... 1 or 2 clicks.

Thank you for answer.
It is same PUFF with stock muffler, i just replaced silver tail.
with stock is even stronger PUFF.
Silver tail i bought in bike shop, they say it is special for savage / s40
it is not an open muffler.
what do you think if i put back original main jet who is 130, and put pilot 57.5?
i will try with choke, thank you for advice. Wink

For choice of muffler, it is hard to find any muflers herein Europe, specialy in country as Serbia where i am living

#57.5 is huge for a pilot...
Savages tend to be leaner on the main, but not so bad on the pilot...

"Jet kits" from Sigma and Dyno tend to be almost random... and worse than useless...
If you must buy a kit,... get one from Lancer , because he knows Savages... or, just buy the individual jets you need...

So, what do you propose, to go with higher main jet and keep stock 47.5
Just send an message to lancer for jet kit.
will see if he can send to France, that is where i can take without a problem.
Tomorow will put back stock jets with stock mufler on, will inform here what happens.
but this silver tail mufler is so nice, so nice sound.
it is this one, they make it for savage http://www.louis.de/index.php?topic=artnr_gr&artnr_gr=10030600&lang=en

now i see it is silver tail-leovince

It's always helpful to add your location to your profile...
Especially if you are in a country where parts are hard to get... Wink...

I'd stay with the #150 main,.. and try a #50 or #52.5 pilot,... if you can find one...
... a 155 and pilot 57.5 set-up will ruin your fuel mileage... and probably not run good...
Getting rid of a little shut-down poof,.. by ruining performance and mileage is a bad trade...
Just learn to like the poof.... Grin...

Thank you all for answers.
I edited profile  Smiley
Will search for pilot jets.
Everybody tell me that it is not a problem that puff, but I just don't like it.  Smiley

P.S. what do you think about this silvertail muffler?

I looked at the website and all the mufflers they have were made for sportbikes, and the only Suzuki listed were the 600 & 750 2011/12 sportbikes.

http://www.leovince.com/files/SIL/IM-2226-GB.pdf

Stuff there that mite matter in a few miles..

If youre riding & shifting & its not makin a lot of racket, just on shut down, then Im gonna say its not a leak problem,Serowbot is really good on carbs. So, I suggest you avail yourself to his experience & jet it accordingly,I would,
Your elevation above sea level is something he will need. YOu can just search for the name of the city or region.. youll likely find longitude/latitude & elevation.

So on pic is my bike with silvertail muffler. All is well fitted and attached.
On bike there is no other problem just this PUFF after shut down engine.
Thank you again for advices

I posted this in another thread....but it is worth repeating here.

When you turn off the ignition it stops the spark plug from igniting the fuel - but it does not instantly stop the engine from turning and pulling fuel and air out of the carb and pumping it through the engine and into the exhaust system.  The hot exhaust can ignite this unburned fuel and air.....and POOF!

Shutting it off after a long ride with little time to cool down can make it happen more often than slow local rides where the exhaust system is not as hot.

The pops don't hurt a thing......

I understand, but this happens just even at short drive, just for example 1km long drive. Dont  go even on 4th speed, just 60-70km/h
