Question regarding the cam adjuster
08/11/13 at 18:58:30
Hi. Can anyone tell me if the cam adjuster will max out due to the cam chain stretching or is it something else that makes the stock cam adjuster go out? Also is the person who made the adjuster that others have used still making them? My bike has about 7,000 miles on it and I am trying to plan ahead for the cam adjuster. Does every one of the S 40's have the cam problem or just some? is there a way to detect or prevent this from happening? please let me know. Thanks, S40 Guy.

Every Savage and S40 has a factory installed poorly designed engine wrecker, aka, cam chain tension adjuster. The high failure rate is a combination of a very cheap cam chain and a very poorly made tensioner.
Yes, Verslagen1 is still on the board and supplying the correct design.

Mine is a 2006. So when the noise starts to be noticed, the cam chain and adjuster will need to be replaced? Do you know if a regular guy with some mechanical skills can do the tensioner and cam chain? I do have the Clymer 1986 to 2012 manual, not the older one, so do you know how hard it would be to do the chain replacement? Thank you very much. S40 Guy.

at half the recommended stretch, the plunger will no longer be in the housing.
the adjuster is in the marketplace...
