I have recently bought my first bike from a co-worker in the US Army , the bike is a 1996 ls650 that has started a bobber transformation. The guy I bought it from let is sit for a while and with misuse of everyday tools the carb is unserviceable. I don’t want to spend the ridiculous price for a oem part. I am looking into a mikuni universal carb. I have read a few people going with the vm-36 but I am still a new learner into the motorcycle world. I would like some help or insight on a decision from someone with a little experience.

Sorry if any of my lingo is not to parr but I am still new to this

Screws can be removed and replaced with stainless hex head screws. vice grip pliers can be used to remove stripped screws for the last time. even totaled jets can be removed with some patience. you might ask in the bst if anyone has one laying around unused for cheap.

Perhaps he meant the Marketplace.

Why don't you just clean and rebuild the carb you have?

This was a pretty rough carburetor, complete with island style salt spray corrosion -- yours isn't anywhere this ugly now is it?

If a girl can go do it, so can you, do it much better no less.

if i can get these screws out i could rebuild it. but when i am looking for a rebuild kit. i dont know what i am looking for, there are many different gaskets and jets and others things in this carb that i can not find in one "kit" am i looking this up wrong or can you give me some advice.

when the carb was on the bike it dumped gas everywhere, gas came out the filter, the exahst. the previous owner let it sit for 8 months with none of the fluids drained. so i believe i should just replace everything in the carb

Its late, Im tired, not typin all ya need now,, BUT Do not panic! Youre in the right place, we can help ya fixi it, For now, check the oil level. YOu may have gotten gas in the oil, YOu need tools & a maintenance manual.

Sounds like you got a stuck float. You gotta get the carb off the bike and get the bowl off the carb.

Once the carb is in your hands, a small (5 or 6 inch not sure which) pair of vise grips should be able to grab the screw heads and let you turn them. When you get the bowl off, you'll be able to tell a lot more about the condition.

I've also read good things on here about using an impact driver (small one) to get some screws loose. If the heads aren't too messed up, you might try that.

The bowl will unstick and float up to the proper range again -- providing something isn't in there holding it back physically.
