Reassemble the engine, 4 dowels?
07/08/13 at 00:59:37

Helle there,

When I checked the engine parts (cilinder, cilinder head, etc) I found that I have one locating dowel spare.
According to clymer there is only one locating dowel on the bottom of the cilinderhead? My guess is that there are two, but Clymer didn't show it?
I have two locating dowels on the engine, one on the bottom of cilinderhead, and two different sizes (smaller) on top of the cilinderhead.

On the photo I have numbered the 3 locating dowels and the one from which I think is no 4.
Anyone?

idk what the book says, but, gaskets will usually be cut to line up on thos dowels. usually 2 per gasket, on ones that can slide, one is enough if its around something, so it cant spin,
ive never had a spare,, i doubt you should,

You have spotted the correct hollow locator pin location for your second hollow locator pin.

You can verify by fitting the alignment hollow pin into the hole, then dropping the gasket over it to see if it fits and aligns.

If it is wrong, then the parts won't go, either one of them.

Oh, of course not yesterday I was repairing the engine-I could not exactly tell... but the bottom of the cylinder 2 pins is totally I remember. one between the cylinder head and the cylinder, close to the well for timing chain. and one pin between the cylinder head cover and the cylinder head

Thats what I thought, but why doesn't Clymer show two dowels on the cilinderhead?

It looks like the cylinder head illustration is the same one the Factory Parts manual uses.....and they only show one dowel.  If you look in the parts listing however they do list that 2 are required.

For most things that have dowels to locate and stabillize the connection, it always requires 2 dowels.  One dowel will still allow rotation around the single dowel......two dowels will stabilize the part in all directions.

No dowel #5 on the parts list? or when you tore it down? or in the clymer picture? cause I see #5 in the picture to the left and up about 2" from the circled dowel.

There is a dowel 5, but it's likely stuck in the cover or something, this dowel is a bit smaller than the bigger ones where I was talking about.

edit: took a image from internet to show you:

I have another question, I have bought some high-temp liquid gasket.

Do you guys think that I have to put that on every gasket? I am going to use the original gaskets as well ofcourse...

But every gasket or just the cover?

I never use gasket sealer on the gaskets....and neither did the factory.  The center of the case halves and the head cover get sealer.  It only needs to be a small bead about the size of a pencil lead.  If you put too much on it squeezes out and looks bad - and it can restrict the proper flow of oil to the cam bearaings if you apply it too heavy.

I used Suzukibond on my engine, and I applied it with a small plastic syringe and it worked much better than trying to squeeze a tube and apply the sealer accurately.  I just pulled the plunger out of the syringe and squeezed the sealer from the tube into the syringe, then put the plunger back in.  The syringe was a small one about 1/4 inch diameter.  I am sure you can get them at CVS or Walgreens, etc.

I have always hated this look......to me it alwys screams out that the engine has been taken apart.

The factory sealant is black....and there is only a tiny bit that squeezes out.

This look is even worse when the cylinder and head are black!
