Yup, I hates it too -- I use black sealant on my black engine and silver sealant on my silver engine.
I also peel the excess off when it is just shy of full cure (still stretches and pulls free & clear & clean like a rubber band, it does)

wow Dave, that looks awful!
Happy I bought some grey sealant, I used it before (tiny bit) and it was nice an tidy.
So I dont have to seal the engine to cilinder gasket, only the cilinderhead and cover?

Dave, is that orange stuff some kind of mold or fungus?
I couldn't find Suzukibond local so I used Hondabond HT on the crank halves and cylinder head cover. $12 for a tube. Worked great and no leaks. The HT is for gasketless metal to metal.

Those two pictures of the orange gasket goo are not any bike I have worked on....they are just pictures I grabbed off another post in the technical section. I believe it is the high temperature stuff from Permatex.....not sure.
They cylinder head temperature guage that I have shows that the temperatures are generally under 300 degrees - you might get a bit higher if you are in traffic or the desert. I woudl think the temperatures are never going to be over 320 degrees....ever. I looked at the Permatex site and all of their products are good to 400 degrees, the high temperature ones are good to 600 degrees.
I bought the Suzukibond....or ou could use Hondabond or Yamabond. They are all made specifically to seal motorycle engines.

Sorry to have confused you. If you are only working on the cylinder and head.....you don't need to worry about the case halves. You only need to go there for crank, bearing or transmission troubles. Chances are you will be better off to buy a good used engine instead of splitting the cases and doing any work....parts are expensive when you break stuff down there. In the attached photo....look for the seam that runs dow the center of th engine. The case halves must be seperated to get the crank or transmission accessible.

I see Dave, thank you for the good help!
I didn't take the halves apart so gladly there's no problem
The engine is already assembled again, I have to place a few helicoils though in the headcover (the smal caps on the sides were a little too tight the previous time and I can't apply the specific torque anymore...
As I was looking in the holes, I did see that they are nog all the way drilled, so my guess is that I can dril the hole to put helicoils in without having to take of the headcover again...

For the record, the subject sealant looks exactly like
Permatex® Ultra Copper® Maximum Temperature RTV Silicone Gasket Maker
I used to use this sealant on my head cover. It worked OK, but after about 4000 miles or so, I started getting some oil weepage. So, I quit using it.....
It's good stuff though - I've had great luck with it in other applications.
