California Gender:	Project: whiner 07/01/13 at 20:53:07 I had a counter balancer bearing go bad a couple of years ago (engine shelved) and I'm finally getting around to fixing it. Got the flywheel off, but to get the starter gear off, I gotta pull this flywheel key off. Any trick to get it out? Or can I leave it and just leave all this sh!t nested in the half while I go after the counter balancer bearing?

If thats a woodruff key its round on bottom. IF thats how it is, shoot the penetrating oil on it. soak time, then punch & hammer time straight down on the inside end. That raises the outside end & you can slip a dulled chisel in & lightly, slowly, gently bump it out of the slot,,
If its a square key, tap it to the end of the slot, build a chisel tip to fit down in the groove & , again, slow & easy , watch whats happening,

I'm inclined to leave it if it's that well stuck.

That key is for the Magneto Rotor....not the flywheel (although it is very heavy and does work like a flywheel). There is another flywheel behind the large starter gear.

The key is a half moon type key and will come out if you hit on the ouside face of it with a punch. Use a brass punch if possible....then you can hit it hard and will not hurt it. A slight taper on the punch will help.....with the longest part being a the bottom so that as the key comes up the angle helps to wedge it out.

Crank bearing replacement......where did the metal pieces from the bad countershaft bearing go? I would probably replace them while I was in there if I was planning on keeping the engine a long while. If you want a right crank bearing with only 1,000 miles on it.....I got one I can give you. My left crank bearing went out at 1,000 miles, and I replaced both while I was in there.

That's definitely part #4, woodruff key. If you don't have a brass punch, I'd probably just use a small chunk of wood or PVC. Just something to tap it out with and not mar it up. Of course, you're hitting it on the side closest to the bearing, aren't you?

It's been a couple years; was there any oil left on the engine when you shelved it? It's not rusted in there, is it?

The Yamaha 660 motor I have in my MZ has a few cases on the clutch side, right side ... well known cases, but mine ate the thing on the starter clutch side - left side of the motor. Cool. Srinath.
