You inspired me to take a closer look at the chain I bought (see OP).  Indeed, said chain shows an embossed "M" on some of the side plates.

All is well in Mudville.....

Tsubaki, bulk cam chain. You'll need to get the specs from Lancer, Verslagen or Oldfeller. Hard to find, worth every cent.
