21" wheel
06/09/13 at 16:38:07

Hey everone! I'm just getting threw the nightmare of finding a brake caliper for 77 sportster, with a 2000 front end, and a 21" wheel for a 99 sporty. Its time for some new rubbers for my 95 savage and before commiting to some expensive white walls I was wondering if anyones knows of a decent quality, decently priced, 21" wheel for the savage that"bolts on". I'm wondering who has done this mod before and who is selling a wheel that I can keep my rotor and caliper. Any suggestions?

Bolt on? Maybe, and I mean maybe, a VS800GL wheel turned 180 in the forks. Maybe. Can't remember the axle size on the old 800 Intruders. The Savage is a bit of an odd duck, 5/8" axle, just like the old Titan 2 stroke or Honda 250/305 CB and CL from 1961 to about 1968 or so. Most bikes in that axle size have front drums. Which, if your front brake is as lousy on your 95 as the one is on my 98... you're better off with a Titan TLS drum and a 21" hoop and spokes from Buchanan's.

Convert the rear to a 16" hoop at the same time. Much easier to find 130/90-16 rears than it is 140/80 or even 140/90 15 inchers, with a whole lot more options (brand, whitewall size, single or double pinstripe whites, etc).

A bit more outlay up front, for a whole lot more user friendly machine in the end.

Also did the vs800 ever come with a 21" wheel out of the factory or is this an after market thing. And I'm having trouble DI ding one any leads on a good place to look? Last, I don't want to buy garbage, what are the better manufactures for this out there?

Wouldn't it be simpler to just buy a 21 inch rim with the same spoke count and re-lace it to the stock Savage hub?

VS800 was 21" only through 99. Has it's own rotor that is nicer looking than the Savage rotor.

Online or a bike graveyard are your best bets to get one.

If you like your hub/rotor, lace on a 21" hoop. Hoops are cheap, spokes are not.

Depends. I had my rear relaced and with new tyre I was $1000 out of pocket.Could I get another rear from a different bike to fit/ I don't know. But if I could that would have been easier.

I've decided on buying a radaelli Milano hoop off of ebay for $40 bucks. I'm ordering a set of stainless steel spokes from Buchanan spokes which is going to run me around $90. Then I'm lucky enough to have a buddy who will lace and tru it all up for me for free. White walls are on the way and now I just need a set of mini apes to top it off.
