Backfire, stutter then died?
06/08/13 at 14:01:44
Hi I was riding home lastnight and slowed down as i was coming into a township and as i was slowing down my bike started backfiring constantly about 5 to 6 times in a row, i then started losing acceleration and it felt like i ran out of petrol so i quickly switched to reserve and my bike completely died. I parked up for 2mins to check my bike over and the first thing i noticed was my ignition port where i put the key in was hanging loose, i double checked it was in reserve, fired it up and rode it home which was just around the corner, rode into a police stop, which was a drama, and during this drama i mustve switched back to on instead of reserve because when i got home it was switched to the on position. Any ideas? Sorry for the novel just trying to give you a better insight. Cheers

the backfiring can be a low voltage thing, and since there was an issue with the ig key, maybe it.

I agree. When we were kids way back in the last century we used to make our cars backfire by switching the key off for a second then turning it back on. KAPOW! Of course that was when you could still do that kind of stuff without locking the steering wheel and runnin'off the road.

...people do that on bikes, by flicking shut-off switch on the bars for a second...
Probably shouldn't have told anyone about that...

Awesome it sounds like the culprit, havent been for a ride yet but ill let ya know how it goes. This all happen in front of a police stop so the police heard me stutter and pop all the way towards them lol. and that was the 2nd talking to i had by the boys in blue that night. But not the last. I went thru a 3rd after that, wasnt a happy chappy. :'(
