I think I bettered my own deal.
I just ordered this one,....hard to beat this price....AGM free ship
http://www.ebay.com/itm/YTX14AHL-BS-Motorcycle-Battery-for-SUZUKI-LS650-Savag...

I received this battery yesterday. It came in record time
It was fully charged, and standing at 13.2 volts
I hung a load test on it, and it held the same voltage as a large automotive battery. I was impressed.
Seems to me a super great deal on an AGM battery,.....if anyone is interested.

Dave is correct about charging these AGM batteries...the one I just put in a customer's bike specified a 1.6 amp charger MAX or battery damage will result.

For how many hours?...

Serow,

I like to initially hit a new battery with a charging current equal in amps to 1/10 of the battery's Ah rating.  I keep this going until the voltage needed to push that current reaches about 14.5 (note that the voltage needed to push the desired amperage will rise slowly as the battery takes a charge).  At that point, I then maintain a more or less constant charging voltage of about 14.5.  I keep this going such that the total duration of the entire initialization procedure lasts somewhere between 10 and 24 hours.

Thats an interesting approach. Makes sense, I

jus,

I'm guessin' you'd need to spend big bux on a charger that could do this.

I use a battery charger/car starter for the power source, a battery load tester to control the voltage in the charging circuit, and two VOMs, one to monitor battery voltage during the initialization and one to measure the current in the charging circuit.

All adjustments are then done manually by me.

Oh, I use a remote IR thermometer to shoot the battery case temperature every now and again.....

IHTH someone!

The tools don't need to be top grade stuff.  You could spend $83.00 at Harbor Freight and get everything but the thermometer.  Throw in a 20% off coupon on the charger/starter and save another 10 bucks....

That's probably a lot cheaper than a charger that could run through the sequence automatically!

Hey guys, I'm Ralph and new here.  I'll post more about me and my bike in the introduce me thread as soon as I can.

In short, I have an 86 (all stock) and need to get a new battery and wonder what you guys recommend.  I've been sold 2 "junk" batteries from the dealer and will never go back.  Is the one posted about above on ebay from ChromeBatteries for about $54 bucks a good one?  I'm on a tight budget right now and just need one I can get some use out of that isn't very expensive.
I know everyone has different opinions, but what would you guys recommend?
Thanks in advance, guys.  I've been reading most of the threads here for quite some time and just recently made an account.  I appreciate all of the time you have spent putting information on here.

There are a lot of opinions on the "correct" way to charge a lead-acid battery. The one I like says charge it at C/10 ("C" being its amp-hour capacity) until it reaches about 14.4 volts (some say 14.6). Then hold the voltage constant until the current drops to C/100. Then if you feel it desirable drop the charge voltage to somewhere around 13.2 volts, which is supposed to be a float voltage. This is approximately the sequence followed by automatic battery chargers such as the Battery Tender.

For a 14 AH battery, stock on the S40, this means initial (bulk) charge at 1.4 amps. You are unlikely to damage the battery as long as the initial charge rate is no more than 2 amps. If the initial rate is lower, say 1 amp, there will be no harmful effect except that the charge will take longer.
