Hello I'm a new member and new to motorcycles I recently bought a 2003 savage. It already had the jardine rambler exhaust and it backfires like crazy. Should I rejet the carb. And how is that done I saw an article from bikebandit.com that states I can buy the new jets from them. Sorry for my ignorance. Thanks

You might have accidentally put diesel in it... or gotten some bad gas...
I'd drain the tank,. and try some fresh regular unleaded...

You don't need that... all you need is a pilot and a main jet...
$5 each...
or, get a selection of several sizes from Lancer for about $20...

Dynojet stuff has a different numbering system for their jet sizes... things get complicated and confusing... stay away from dynojet ... overpriced crap...
Get Mikuni jets... it's a Mikuni carb....

The stock carb on your bike is a Mikuni BS40...

.... or,.. try your local bike shop... and buy one incremental step at a time, for $5 a pop...
Mikuni is the most common carb used on any bike... jets are easily available...
Lancer has a pretty good deal on this assortment....
(7 jets, 3 pilot/4 main, plus extras... including washers for needle spacing )...

For a Jardine,... I'd probably start with a #155/52.5 and 2/3 spacer... especially if you are adding a free flow air filter...

I don't recommend Jardine mufflers,.. but since your bike came with it... it's your choice...
They are very loud, and open... you will lose powerband and low-end torque, in exchange for peak HP... and they are harder to jet for smooth running...

You can always buy a Harley shorty take-off for $30 and have a less peaky, and quieter bike... and sell the Jardine for more than that, to someone looking for a jackrabbit, noisemaker...

The hard part is getting those carb screws loose w/o stripping them out or cracking the carb.
Those arent #2 phillips screws. YOull strip them if you try a #2. YOu Can take a #2 & grind the tip till the X fits into the slot out to the edges or buy
(IIRC) JIS screwdrivers.
A handheld impact is cheap & if you know how to use it, very helpful.
KNOW its gonna turn the correct way, then hold it down hard in the screw head & twist it as much as ya can while keeping it set right, then tap it.Dont smash it,
You mite even take the new impact apart, check the ramp out & make sure its all smooth & lubed & working well,,

Proper support for the carb is important.
If ya dont have antiseize in your shop, get some,, Those carb screws will always come out when ya want them to.

A pin punch & very lite hammer ( Maybe a medium sized chisel) can be used to drive metal back into position on those soft screw heads. Again, remember to back up the flange. A small socket provides support all the way around a protruding screw.
