Clutch cable getting hot and blowing fuses
05/23/13 at 20:25:55

My clutch cable burned through the rubber enclosure today. I am hoping someone can tell me what is going on. First my fuse blew. I put a 30 amp fuse in it did not blow but my clutch cable heated up hotter than hell. i put a 20 amp back in a few hours later and it blew right away. when my key is the on position i=the cable is heating up. My mechanic (only works on harleys but loves my s40 bobber) thinks it may be the neutral safety switch? He has not seen my bike since this started. Fellas ya'll are the experts please help.

neutral safety switch is a long ways from the cable.
something must be shorted on it.  take the tank off and search.

The neutral safety switch blue wire is hot.....but it passes through the indicator light before it goes down the frame.  If the blue wire is shorted out the worst that could happen .....is the neutral light will come on.

It is more likely to be something shorted out in the wiring harness that takes power up to the instrument lights or the handlebar switches, or headlight.

You need to take the tank off and inspect the wires that are in contact wit the clutch cable.....one of them probably has the insulation rubbed off.

1bozo,

You have a short somewhere.

I had a similar problems except it was the throttle cable getting hot and melting the plastic liner. What caused it was the positive connector for the battery tender and rubbed up against the battery cover and shorted out.
