example of good idle speed

For those of us who don't have tachometers, and who have tried with no success to use the smartphone apps and such that don't work...

Is there a YouTube clip of a Savage that has a nice example of the *right* idle speed?  Can one of the moderators/experts make a permanent link to a video so we noobs can get it right?

There are a few "metronome" videos, like this one:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QImRxzVz3hg

For a bike that has two revs per explosion, does a 500bpm click track give a tempo for 1000rpm?

Yep, that should be the slow end of the range of a normal idle speed for our bikes....good find!

Perfect, but a touch faster doesn't matter/mite be better, as long as you can still engage the clutch, and drop it in gear w/o abnormal gear clash.

Great link, sounds good! One of the hardest things as a newbie to DIY bike wrenching is knowing the sounds... what sounds good for an idle, what a bad cam chain sounds like, etc.

Confession: I haven't taken the brass stopper off my idle mixture screw because I'm afraid of boogering up screw if I go too deep...  Sad

Just rig up some kind of stop on the drill bit. Some people use tape, some use a small piece of round wood. Just drill through the wood where there is just enough drill sticking out to drill through the screw cover.

On the correct idle RPM. I believe the book says 1100 + - 100. I am thinking about buying an inductive tach to make the job easier. they are not that expensive.

I adjusted mine by ear and the 500 bpm clip is dead on.

My idle speed changes for the first fifteen minutes. I'm fiddling with it for a while. I can't set it and forget it.

JOG, have you fiddled with the air/mix screw yet? That's what impacts the idle response and if it's not right it can cause the idle to dance around. You may not get it perfect, but maybe that'll help keep it in a smaller variation. Of course I adjusted mine on the Savage, and recently went through the exact same issue on the Ninja and the air/mix screws were the solution to jumpy idle issues.

It doesn't Dance around.
It's very predictable.
Maybe it's something that would be somewhat controlled, I should try the idle air,, it's Free!
