86 Savage Electrical Issues
05/06/13 at 12:04:27

Hello everyone,
I am having a major problem with my 86 Savage. Whenever the bike warms up to running temperature I lose spark to my spark plug. I just got my baby back from the mechanic who has had it for 6 months and could not figure out the problem. I am about to tackle this project myself and if I could get help narrowing it down to the one part that needs replacing it would be greatly appreciated. I was thinking I might have to get a new main harness because that is the only part of the electrical system that looks bad to me. I don't know if this is relevant but before I sent the bike to the shop it would start turning over as soon as the battery is hooked up with no key in the ignition or anything. The mechanic never mentioned the bike doing so when he had it so I don't know. He only said that when he test drove it that it would lose spark when the bike heats up. Please help!

I have seen coils when they start going bad break down when they heat up. I guess the igniter  box could do the same thing.

It could be a lot of things.  The first thing I would do is wire a small light bulb into the red wire on the coil, and run the other end to a ground.  The light should be on whenever the coil is getting power. This will show you if power is going to the coil.....and if any of the safety circuit is taking the power away from the coil as things heat up. If that does not change - then you need to look at the other side of the coil toward the igniter side......not sure how to test that...maybe there is a test process in the manual....I will look.

It seems as if another member had a similar problem last summer or fall. Undecided  Anyone remember or possibly have a link?

Thanks guys I checked out the decomp controller post and if the ghost starting happens again I know what to do, my main concern is keeping spark when the bike warms up.

keep in mind that if you leave the power on all night, it's possible to burn out your CDI.

Holy oxidation!! What happened to you engine side cover Wayne?

Maybe you could find a wiring harness on ebay and start from scratch. Seems that would be easier than sorting out that mess of wires.

There is a wiring harness on ebay right now for 19.99 plus shipping. Not sure what year though.

Jeepers!... that bike looks like it was parked under the pier for a while...

Firstly,.. I'd jumper bypass the clutch, and sidestand cut-outs... (just to eliminate them from the power chain)... (you could put them back, later, after you find the cause)...
It could be corrosion in one those switches... Huh Huh...

Yes the clutch and sidestand cut-offs were already eliminated, as well as the fuses from the previous owner.

Just being close enough to the ocean can do that from the salt air, usually happens when the protective clear coat is missing or even worn down to minimal. I grew up in a sea side community and had it happen to bikes and cars.   Sad
