Oil Pump Replacement
04/28/13 at 18:52:07

Is the oil pump only accessible by splitting the engine? And if so while i'm there should I replace it? Engine done 68000 km h.

Any time an engine is down & the oil pump is accessible its smart to put a new one in,

Ring in all you high mileage guys -- our oil pump does have some replaceable parts (with all of the parts available through using some other older Suzuki bikes as the microfiche source) but so far to our recollection it hasn't been a big maintenance item, period, ever.

Why are you replacing it again?   What is your oil pressure at 1,000 rpm idle speed again?

Or are you just "theorizing about it" while considering a break the cases tear down?

Economically speaking, a "break the cases tear down" costs more in parts, bore/machine shop $$ and do it time than buying a cheap used engine from a breaker house.

I am tearing it down and thought, "Should I replace this while I have access?" It has been working fine. I am planning on rebuilding this engine with performance parts. Bigger Bore, Hotter cam, etc, etc.
So if I understand you properly, The oil pump should not be touched if it is working properly.
Is this a part that has never caused problems in the past?
Has this part been improved over the years?
So thats 1 for yes and 1 for no.

Not in our country its not. We don't get wrecked savages down here.Parts are hard to come by.
Plus in the bigger pic i am going to save thousands in Registration fees because i will have a worked 650 in a 400 shell. Its cheaper to Reg a 400 than a 650.
And another thing is the 400 is a 5 speed. And I like the 5 speed.
I am doing most of the work myself so $$$ is not a prob.  Smiley
I also plan to keep the bike.

I currently have a 650 in my bike now and it runs like a dream.
This engine I plan to take my time and work it to the max just to see how it performs.

To Register a motorbike over 600cc is $750 a year, So you can see why I want it to look like a 400.Its a little over half that for bikes under 600cc. http://www.jockeyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=61051nt .

Paul, the NZ rego for a 600cc plus is about $NZ 521 per annum, if you had to compliance your bike, it may have been about $NZ 750 to get it back on the road.

ya'll get taken to the cleaners  Huh

Here in TX it cost $55 a year registration $30ish for inspection and I pay $260 for full coverage insurance with roadside assistance for my savage. So $350 a year total.....

Texas ain't kind to you. In Tennessee I pay $14.50 for plate renewal, there is no inspection and full coverage is $125. But I'm an old geezer with a clean driving record and I have two cars, a truck and my house on the policy so I get a big discount.
