Engine Dies when I come off the throttle
04/27/13 at 16:31:17

Hey guys,

I tried to search but couldnt find anything, so here goes...

I rejetted last week, I am running a 52.5 pilot and 150 main. about to put on a K&N pod filter.

The engine is pulling strong, but when I come off the throttle to start braking, the engine just dies. I can feather the throttle as I slow down, but it still slows down to what seems like 200-400 RPMs. Then it will speed up back to proper idle.

I am guessing I need to step up the pilot jet to maybe a 55 and a 152.5 main.

What do you guys think?

thanks

Clean the TEV valve.

and check your idle speed, it's probably too low.

Whats the TEV valve?

and it actually slows down to an RPM much lower than my idle, then it speeds up to the idle RPM

Raising the needle some may help. I know the needle is for mid-range but there is some overlap to the idle circuit.

How many turns out do you have the pilot fuel screw?

Screw is out 2 1/4 turns.

I have done the white spacer mod, replace with 3 washers.

Maybe I need to remove one, bring it down to 2 washers.

Try turning the screw out some more. If you have to go more than three turns then going to a 55 pilot will help. What elevation are you at.

Changing the pilot jet is a lot easier than taking out a washer.

I think we've narrowed down that symptom to a dirty TEV valve but could be something else.

I wouldn't get into mod's on this thing... to easy to go wrong and replacement parts not easily available.

I am about 1000 ft above sea level. Ill try turning the screw out, and if that doesn't work then Ill bump up the pilot jet to 55

I am at about 800ft elevation and a 55 pilot is too rich for me. I am running 52.5 pilot and a 150 main with the 3 washers on the needle. My bike was running the same exact way. It took me a few days but now it's running strong and no dipping under idle or stalling. It's your TEV valve. Clean it and add a washer in there if need to. I ended up having to add 2 small skinny washers . I took that TEV valve cover off at least 6 times just trying different sizes of washers till the last test ride when it didn't dip under idle anymore and no backfiring on decel. Good luck.

ok, ill give the TEV a good clean, see what happens.

Do you know what size those washers are by chance?

thanks everyone

There is a mod in the tech section of this website that you might want to check out. It's about adding a washer to the TEV valve to add alittle more tension to the spring. When I had only the spring in there it would drop below idle and almost stall sometimes and when I added a washer it wouldn't drop idle but it would backfire on decel real bad... It was some loud popping, crackling and backfiring... But I kept playing with it and I found the right tension for the valve. I didn't put the 2 small washers on the TEV cover, I put them in where the spring sits in the valve. It added the right amount of tension and now no backfiring on decel and steady running with no dipping under idle. Good luck, hope I helped.

When you clean the TEV be sure to blast the tiny holes in the carb body going in and out to that valve with a can of carb spray and use the tiny red tube that comes with it so you get a good pressure spray of the cleaning fluid in the holes.  If those holes are not clear then the TEV will not work properly.
Get this done before you change any jets and you can see how it responds.

I know this post is old, but OP never did reply to say if TEV was the fix.  His symptoms sound nearly identical to the issues I'm having.  I've chased idle speed, idle mixture, vacuum leaks, Raptor petcock.  All given attention, all dead ends.

The responsiveness of the carbs seem great otherwise.  acceleration is responsive, idles fine.  Just during decel will the bike dip below idlespeed.  and unless I blip the throttle will die.

So I'll try TEV next.  Is it possible to only remove TEV and keep rest of the carb intact and on the bike?

Take care. That stuff is not a good eyewash. Like Brylcream,a little dab'l do ya. And breathing it is not a great idea either. I inhale, shoot, leave and exhale. I don't care about the time it takes. I use a fan, too.
