speeds for gear positions on an 87

Sorry for the noob question, but I rode my bike the other day for only the 2nd time and im not familiar with the recommended speeds for the transmission. It seems to me that if im in the city or on a 35 mph road, 3rd gear is winding but if I shift to 4th, it seems too high of a gear for that speed. This is my first bike and im trying to get better mpg. What are the proper speeds for each gear??

These are not recommended shift points... Shift at around 3.5k to 4k for good mpg's... ...4.5k to 6k for max acceleration...

Mine (see signature block) is a 5-speed.

It's pretty simple:

When accelerating, 20 mph means shift to 2nd,

30 mph means shift to 3rd,

40 mph means shift to 4th,

and 50 mph means shift to 5th.

Does anyone see a pattern here?

For example, If I'm tooting around at 38 mph, I stay in 3rd, unless I'm going down a long hill.

I was thinking the same thing..... I wish mine was a 5 speed but from what I hear the color is a pretty rare option for '87 that's half the reason why I bought it in the first place... I believe the color is Suzuki blue ( it looks dark blue in the shade but kind of bluish purple pearl in the sun). The other half is the price Wink
