Reluctant transmission
04/19/13 at 06:41:03

Had the bike out for the winter to do headgasket.  All oil drained for a few months.  Now back together with fresh oil.  But transmission (which I went no where near) is balking.  Will shift from 1 to 2...but then fight shift to 3,4 5.  On way down will fight from 3 to 2.

Do you all think it is just needing to spin a bit or maybe an issue with clutch adjustment or linkage adjustment.

Seems to shift fine from neutral into first and then up to second. Huh

Input welcome!

It is most likely a linkage problem with the shifting mechanism at the footpeg.  Check the movement of that mechanism, clean and grease if necessary, and check the staightness of the rod and the tightness of the fittings.

Thanks for the advice.  You won't believe how dumb I was.  I have a Ryca Cafe conversion, and had the engine out this winter.  When I reassembled things, I put the shifter cam on the armature inside out.  It really was causing the rear-set problems but I still shifted (sort of).  I should have looked at the Ryca build video again but was too confident.  Anyway, you were dead right.  All better now. Thanks. Wink

Nope, absolutely not.  But I thought that the oil pouring down the front of the head was caused by one, and tore the top half down before spending adequate time in this Forum.  Therein I learned, alas too late, that the problem was likely just that stupid plastic plug in the head cover.

Anyway, I got to learn about the valve train and decarbonize the combustion chamber...

Now I read this forum avidly before I do anything!
