What needs to be done with a muffler swap?
04/06/13 at 18:10:35

I am really wanting to swap my muffler with a harley dyna like many here have. I'm confident I could do the actual swap (even though I'm new to motorcycles and mechanical work). But what I'm worried about is all this talk of having to rejett and tune the carburetor. I'm not exactly sure what is needed to do this or if I'll be able to do it. I would just like to know what all is needed to be done if I swap my muffler and what rejetting actually is. Sorry for the wall of text. Thank you for your time!

Read here... Wink... (a #150/50 with a 2/3 spacer seems to be generally accepted, if you're not too into fiddling)...

Thank you for the link to that guide! That will help a lot! But I'm still a little confused as to what " 150/50# main/pilot and 2/3 thickness spacer" means. Is that the rejetting? I'm very new to this. Could you give me a quick explanation as to what that means?

You will find that in the Tech section of the forums there is a sticky post called the Table of Contents.

It has links to various posts that covers alot of the main issues and fixit's that are common to the savage/s40  it also covers alot of the basic upgrade stuff to our beloved Savage as well.

Could someone clarify what jets I would most likely need?  I've read through the re-jetting and HD muffler guides.  I'm planning on ordering a pair of HD Dyna mufflers off eBay and wanted to plan which jets I would need to go with it.  I've read Serowbot's Stock Carb. Jets list.  In case my info doesn't say, it's for a '97.  As far as I know everything is stock.  So I was planning on ordering a #150 and 152.5 main jet because I don't know what I'll need.  I don't know that we'll ever be driving it above an elevation of 1000' (Gotta love the flat midwest).  And I wanted to make sure that I need a "Large Round" main jet.  I've small round and hex jets listed too.  I was planning on ordering Mikuni jets for the main and the eBay seller that I was looking at only has Keihin pilot jets.  Are those compatible with the stock Mikuni carb.?  I will also probably just buy a #4 nylon washer for the needle jet(?) too.

Anik,... just to start, and to make this easy...
Just get a #152.5 large round Mikuni jet... put it in,.. and see how it runs...
That may be just fine...
If it ain't,.. then consider the spacer mod... and if needed some further jetting...
... but, if you aren't a fiddler... just try the #152.5...
Wink...

Some of us, are just meticulously anal, about jetting, and want perfection...
...and that's really a bit of a fools errand anyway... Grin...

Naaa...

EDIT... sorry, that was curt...
If you drill out brass plug over the idle mix screw... you can set it for best idle... if you end up needing to be more than 3 turns out from closed... then, you need a bigger pilot..

.. but,.. put in the main,.. and see how it goes... jetting is best done incrementally.. observe the results of each change and do more if needed...
Especially for someone just learning... Wink...

Hi Anikun, I just did the dyna muffler swap. Serowbot's Muffler guide was very helpful. I ended up going with a 3-1/2" 10 degree bend adapter pipe my local muffler shop made for me for $15. It just fit alot better with the adapter and I didn,t have to make a crush band. Just curious, why are you shopping for a PAIR of Dyna mufflers?

Make sure they aren't the pair of no baffle ones that have been up on Ebay, unless LOUD is what you are looking for   Shocked

A pair was the cheapest listing.  Then I can have an extra or re-list it.  I don't know if it has a baffle or not, but I'll find out.  Is the bafffle just part of the opening or is it a component inside the length of the pipe?
