since the screen is touch sensitive, this should be able to be adapted to a theft deterrent, either an alarm mode or stealthy call the owner mode.

Both!  or better yet(since it's the owners phone under the stand) fire off the alarm and call the po-lece. And with GPS on smartphones nowadays..... the dang thing will give directions to the scene of da crime!
