If you overly restrict the movement of your ankle,.. impact forces will be transferred to your knee, and on to your hip... (which is worse)...
In the 80's, I think,... they were overbuilding MX boots and there was a rash of knee injuries...
I'd recommend, wearing protection, but not so much that it restricts flexibility...
If your finger can't bend,.. your wrist will,.. if your wrist can't, your elbow will...
The point is,.. if the force is applied,.. the body will have to absorb it somewhere...
Removing flexibility from one area will put extra force elsewhere...
Protect your core the most... the really important stuff is in there...
