Chrome ash tray removal

I would like to remove the chrome head covers. Are there any downsides to doing this? I noticed there is a bolt that goes in from the bottom that an acorn nut attaches to for the cover. Do I need to make sure this is tight? Does it help seal the head in some way?

I drop kicked mine right away.

You can secure this bolt with a stack of washers or a metal tube til the next head plug fix.

Yes, it does help secure this corner from leaks.  I'd either keep the bolt after head work or replace it with a shorter one.

.... a metric socket head screw to match the look of the rest of them and a nut & washer will replace that long sucker just dandy.

Then you have 3 pairs of pretty well matched items. Its time to build a mobile. Some wire, some heavy monofilament & some swivels, some rods set in hard wood that you can put in a vise, so you can bend wire. Need control rod/piano wire from a hobby shop & that stuff isnt "2 pair O nodle neese pliers" bendable,

Not that I buy into this, but it's been said on this board that those glory covers work to improve the cooling flow of air over the head cover.

I sanded mine a bunch, and then painted 'em flat black with engine enamel. Looks better, IMO, especially since the left one had the chrome flaking off the top.

Thanks for that Tip,  I hadn't thought of that.  I just might get out the dremel and cut that stock bolt out and replace it with one coming from the top like that.  Any chance you have the length of the bolt needed for the replacement without the head cover?

I kinda thought  that Suzuki was going for the old Harley panhead look with the head covers. I'd bet they don't have much functional value.  Carl

I like the idea of that, have a pic after the paint job?

I'm kinda skeptical that they help in cooling the head cover, but I suppose that it is possible that they route airflow to a place where it would not go without said covers in place.

Too lazy to actually look into it......
