Shocks?
10/15/12 at 12:56:00
The shocks on the savage are terrible!!! This has to be the roughest riding bike next to a sportster i have ever ridden, i got a set of new s40 shocks and still BAD...has anyone swapped shocks for higher quality ones that actually work? If so pass on the info to save some backs asses and kidneys.

You tried them on softer settings? Are you bottoming them out?

progressive suspension makes a couple for the sportster that work.
I used the 11" for an extra 1/2" of travel.
412-1005 for about $150 if you're under 200#
412-4233 if you're over or ride double.
They make a metric adapter for them, but a .030" wall tube with the right ID is all you need to adapt them to the savage.
Now if you want posh for the over 200 crowd
440-4022
The superslab that I travel on has bumps that I needed to stand up to get thru. with the 440's I'm sitting the whole way.

I bought the progressive 412-4233 11" listed for the intruder. They came with shims that fit the S40. Substantial improvement, though not as good as the 440's (at more than twice the price).

If you go with the Progressive Suspension shocks I would suggest getting the ones that are already made for metric bikes instead of the ones for the Harley's as they come with the spacers needed to fit with them. Here is the a post that shows the different spring rates of the 412 series shocks in the metric bike part numbers that are a direct bolt on upgrade to the savage.

Myself I went with the 412-4233C and found the ride much better then the stock shocks but I'm also over 200lbs and do ride 2 up at times. When solo I keep them on the lowest setting of pre-load when 2 up I bump it up a few clicks

Thanks for the insight and info on the progressive shocks guys!
Looks like the old IBM will be doing a ebay search for a set of 412s.
On a scale of 1-10 how much better are the 412s compared to the factory back breakers.

depends on how you would rate the stock units.
Let's say the stocks are 4... 412's are 6 and 440's are 8.
With the stocks, I named every bump on my commute.
With the 440's, only 2 remain named, still the old names, sledge and double neck popper. ah nostalgia.

Hey, if you are ditching your stock shocks, shoot me a PM. I need at least 1.
