Is it common for the left side cover to fly off?
09/10/12 at 10:25:00
I was riding down the road yesterday and for no apparent reason the left side cover on my bike flew off. When I search ebay and other places I can only find right side covers used. Does that mean all the left ones flew off and got damaged?
I found them new for about $100 but I don't want to spend that much.
Does anyone have a black left side cover they want to sell that will fit an 07 S40?
When I put the cover back on is there anything I can do to prevent it from flying off again?
This was my first ride after getting my valves adjusted and rear tube replaced. Am I wrong in doubting this had anything to do with the cover falling off?
As far as I can figure out I think Part# 47200-24CA0-YAY is what I need. Can anyone confirm this is correct?

Tighten the screw?

Mine came off too.
Note. It may NOT have been the bolt/screw that came out and let the cover fly away.
Look at the CDI bracket that the cover bolts to. A part of that bracket is the part that the cover bolts to. It may have broken off.
That's what mine did.
I was lucky, I went back 3 month later and found my cover. Damaged, but I got the critical dents out so it would mount up again.
Why did I go through that hassle? My cover was hand painted!!

Most motorcycle problems are caused by the nut between the seat and the handlebars. Make sure yours isn't too tight or too loose.

Mine broke off at the top of the bracket as well. I found the bracket and cover (in my color!) here on this forum.
I was told this is original an Arabic saying:
What happens once will never happen again. But what happens twice will surely happen a third time.
If it happened to one of us I would disregard it but the three of us I would suspect it to be a "common" problem.

Sure was.. and on my 2nd trip back to the area to look. They had finally cut the weeds down on that stretch of road. That and the drought was what made it possible.

Mine flew off on the interstate once not from loose screws but from the CDI bracket cracking in half. They can be found on ebay and other places cheaper, on here occasionally too.

I'm going to punch another hole in mine and attach a piece of safety wire back to the frame. It may come loose again, but I will hopefully hear it rattling around before the wire breaks.

Yes, that is the right part, as long as it matches the year for your bike. That black appears to be for 2005, 2006. 2007, 2009. (Is there more than one kind of black?)

Congrats on the find!! .. and you are correct, the bracket is NOT broken in your case.
Just to be fair, a picture of mine.
If you look REAL close, you can see the screw still on the cover.

Dude, how do you post a picture that is an actual picture? I blindly tried for like an hour before searching this site, then the rest of the internet and still couldn't figure it out.
