Now battery has dropped to 9.81 and 7.5 while cranking

Cells in a battery can die for no apparent reason, and they often don't give you any warning before they do.

martin,
I have always considered electrical systems as female...sometimes they just do things without warning or reason...and they too can drive you crazy. Get the load test and be prepared to buy a new bat.

The more I dig in a think i realized the problem now.
Before it did not start from jumping it. After tightening all of the cables and everything it is now only jump starting which is leading me to believe that the problem is a combination of loose cables. And a bad battery

combined problems are always the worst to chase down. I'm very glad to hear that it did start and run. With the voltage readings you've given us I would definately point at the battery.
Now that you've tightened everything down, (and it is starting from a jump, correct?) your battery has been drained a fair bit and just doesn't have the umph to kick it over.

Yeah, and from talking to my girlfriends stepdad, who has been riding and fixing bikes for a while it seems that my charging unit on the bike is working well.
Sometimes i just wanna pull my hair out from frustration with my bike, but somehow i manage to still love it haha

Try chasing down a "Spooky Zuki".  That dang decomp controller can cause all sorts of issues.

Martin, If you have a Clymers it explains really well how to check your charging circuit.

You live and you learn,......sometimes the hard way
Had you read and done what the very 1st reply said to do, "check battery and connections" this thread would have been 4 pages shorter.

1st of all, your bike is an older model that does not have the headlite cutout.
Seeing the headlite go completely out in the "start" mode, was a dead giveaway that the starting voltage was going to near zero (7.5=zero)

Low starting voltage is caused by only 2 things,...............
#1.....the battery itself
#2..... any of many connections, including contacts in the starter sillynoid.

The very first test that should have been done is,.......
Load test the battery,....done in 1 of 2 different ways,....
#1......Use a 50 amp load tester from HF
#2......a volt meter across the battery terminals while hitting the starter

If that would have passed the load test, then its time to check connections, and bypass the started sillynoid.

The first thing I did was check all of the connections. Which was one of the two problems. The two problems made it seem like it was more then it actually was.
The four pages where just one person trying to help me, not a big deal at all. That's what the site is for, to help and connect with other Savage/s40 riders.
I needed the help and it was given. No matter how long the thread was.

Hey, its ok,....I wasn't chewin on ya !

But I was stressing to "all" who ask for help,.....to do what they are told to do, especially something as simple as a batt load test.
It happens all the time, people ask for help, then seems like they almost refuse to do a couple simple tests.

Serowbot mentioned the "relay under the seat" and the "starter solenoid".  I don't know what he is talking about.. the relay under the seat IS the starter solenoid.  I must not understand what he is saying.

What the heck am I talking about?... Grin...
I was thinking about the external solenoid on a car starter... Grin Grin Grin...
Just wasn't picturing the bike starter in my head... Tongue...
Ooops!... Huh...
