lugging sound...knock...what is it?

At idle and at revving in neutral (or with the clutch in) my engine ('98 with 13k) sounds pretty good. Like a "angry sewing machine" as some have said. But, if I lug a little, like say have it in 3rd when it should be in second...or have it in second when it should be in first...I get a pretty loud rapping sound. Kind of reminds me of the sound of the decompression solenoid at start up.
Like a knock-knock-knock until the engine revs up.

Now I know the answer is to not lug the bike....but what is hitting what when that happens? What makes that sound? Loose front pulley? is it normal and I'm just not used to a thumper?

At least not for accelerating hard. Just keeping the speed is fine, but I try to keep it above that. A multi cylinder motor is not as picky, but that big piston doesn't like it to be thrown around at low rpm.

The fuel is going boom while the piston is still traveling upward... .. so the boom hit's it like a hammer... Knock, knock... Who dare?... ...

All kinetically complex machines have languages. It's on us to try and understand them.

It's when we can't understand the languages (or disregard their content) that we run into problems. As in the Space Shuttle (may she RIP) killing 14 fine human beings. The Shuttle always broadcast well in advance what her problems were.....but sometimes, we could not understand her cries..... Sad

Nope, only the Apollo guys got going that fast. We topped out at about 17,800 mph on STS-109.

Still, 17.8 is faster than most Shuttle missions got....we needed the velocity since we were going to the Hubble Space Telescope (350 miles high, as opposed to the low 200's where the Space Station lives).
