Bad Petcock? or..
07/25/12 at 07:33:16

I was riding to work this morning, and I knew I would be needing gas soon.  (I'm new to this savage, it's a '98 with about 13k on it).

No problem, I thought, when it's sputtering, I'll flick the switch to reserve and get some gas...just like my Honda Shadow...

Welll...bike sputters..then dies....I pull over, hit the reserve....nothing...won't start...put it on prime...starts...smells gassy..then dies...won't start (flooded?)..

So..I wait about ten minutes. Call my wife to rescue me. Try "reserve" again..Nothing..Clearly not getting gas.

Wife shows up. We go get some gas, add about a half gallon to the tank...

I put it on reserve....NOTHING...turns over, won't start...

Put it on "ON"...fires up. Runs fine. Go to gas station, fill tank and rode to work. (26 miles).

Seems fine.

Sooooo....what's the diagnosis?  I'm thinking the PO never ran it on reserve, and maybe the reserve passage in the pet thingy is clogged?

I don't know....all my other bikes have manual pet cocks.

What should I do? Thanks!

Put some Sea Foam in the gas to clean up and lube the tank.

have you tried turning it to reserve while its running to see if it dies out or not? if it dies when you turn it to reserve it might be clogged like you said.

No..I'll try that when I get home tonight. That's a simple test...I'm embarrassed to say I didn't think of it...

no problem! i hope it helps you out!  Smiley

oh and i dont know if youve read anything about the Raptor petcock on here or not but its a direct swap out for our stock petcock and its a manual like the rest of your bikes. just something to consider if you come to find your stock is faulty!  roughly $25

Test your Petcock,.. don't just turn it to Prime..     its a link, click on it

Please read all of this Tech document first, then do the test it specifies as it is written.   Don't cheat and only do half of it -- you won't get the full test results that the test should deliver.

You will please notice that you have already shown "It's Raptor Time" symptoms 1-3 in your very first post.

Thanks!  I'll do the test tonight.
(meanwhile, I went over to Bike Bandit and ordered a raptor petcock....probably the issue and if it makes taking the tank off easier, it's worth it).
