Video converter?
07/18/12 at 14:21:13

A friend gave me a couple movies he burned and they wont play on my player, i called the company they told me no burned DVDs will play on this player so i tried my blueray....nope.  Both will play avi so how can i convert divx and xvid to avi?

I did a google search, there are dozens of converters but many have imbeded viruses and other crap to screw up your computer, does anyone have personal experience with a good clean converter?

Will my computer play an avi format?  These might be dumb questions for the computer experts which i am not so understand i only know the basics.

I use this codec pack to play the DivX stuff (and other formats) on my PC: http://www.mediacodec.org/

If you want to convert, NCH software has never given me any problems: http://www.nchsoftware.com/prism/index.html

Yes, your computer will play AVI files.

Divix and Xvid formats will also play on your computer with a free download of the codecs from http://www.divx.com/

AVI files will play natively on any windows operating system without any downloads.

AviDemux is a nice free package for re-muxing video files to different formats with ease.  http://avidemux.sourceforge.net this will simply recopy the file into the different container format of your choice thereby preserving the quality you have now in your copy, instead of trying to transcode and recompress the video into the new container and loose more quality then what it already has from it's original source.

I have to agree with Brian. I use VLC media player and it can play practically any movie format you can throw at it, and here's the kicker. I'm running an old HP Omnibook 6000 with Windows 2000 and only a 900mhz P3 processor and I have no problems with VLC playing anything.

Thanks guys, i now know it will work on the computer.

Are these xvid ,divx to avi converters safe with NO malware or other stuff that has been put up by the big companies so they can infect your computer......yes they are doing this.

Are the links posted something you guys have used yourself? My old xp computer got a nasty root kit that totally ruined it. Even after being cleaned......it still never worked right again so im a bit paronoid about downloads now.

The link I posted is one I have used myself and still do on the rare occasion when I need to do a container to container remux, Though most of the time anymore I transcode straight from a raw ISO to mkv files in H264 so I can preserve the AC3 or True HD audio in surround as well as selectable subtitles.  Also the link I posted is right to the developers site and not some other party host the repackages it.

Formats and codecs can be very confusing,... avi, includes divx,xvid,h264, and others...
Some machines will play some but not others...

To be sure... just convert to DVD... there's a button along the bottom...
That should play on any dvd player...
Wink...

As a professional video editor I can tell you...
DO NOT GET INVOLVED WITH CONVERTING VIDEOS.

You will give yourself a heart attack.
I would return said player and find a resource at best buy or someplace similar to help you choose the best player.

Consumer reports always has a great list of consumer DVD/Blueray players.

After much searching, i found how to hack the player to play region 1-8 well after that it wont play at all now..... Shocked Huh Undecided  :'(

Bot, tried that also still wont work!

While searching i found a company in chi town that sells hacked players that will play all regions and divx and they guarantee them for 1 year. I think i will go that route..........my brain is fried.....
