replaced fork seals today..
07/15/12 at 16:51:50

thanks to the forum, I was able to replace the fork seals and oil on my used 98 I've been fixing up.
Without a lot of reading here, I wouldn't have been able to tackle it.
Thanks to the forum I made a fork seal tool kit first:

pvc and 5/8" bolts and nuts! These saved me a lot of hassle getting the damper bolt out and getting the bushing and seal re-seated!
thanks to Sillydilly : http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1298159607/15 for the info

I had one fork seal leak, but after looking at the rusted mess and gunk under the dustcap, wow! it's a wonder fork oil wasn't squirting me in the eye every time I hit a bump!
I replaced the seal, the clip, the dust seal and the damper bolts and washers.
Suspension much better now!

So the heads of the 5/8 bolts will fit inside to hold the damper?

yep. Pretty good fit to! Just measure flat to flat, look for like .95".
the damper is made to be removed with a 24mm hex socket on an extension. Good look finding one though!  The bolt idea works just as well at a much cheaper price.

I slid the bolt assembly into the tube, then inverted it so the bolt was on the floor. Then put a wrench on the bolt end protruding from the tube, stood on the wrench to keep it from moving, then loosened the 8mm hex bolt on the other end with a allen wrench and a cheater bar. Then used a hex socket and a ratchet.
Worked great.

OK....so what am I missin'?

It seems to me that 5/8" is closer to 16mm then it is 24mm.  Wouldn't you be looking for a 15/16" bolt?  Am I a dope?

5/8" is the thread size (diameter of the bolt). The head is 24mm flat to flat.
