Cam Chain advise Please
07/08/12 at 08:13:59

Hi Guys,
I just checked my tension adjuster and it is at 22mm - Ready to dump the main spring and destroy my engine. I'm going to import a new chain from the UK as the cost here is rediculous (2.5 times higher than the UK or US), the Clymer manual is unclear, do I need to remove the engine from the frame to replace the chain or can I do it in frame? I am presuming I need to remove the cam drive gear and thread the new chain down the side of the cylinder head once the old one is removed - Any usefull tips would be appreciated. I also presume that as long as the lower gear is not rotated separately in relation to the cam gear (two extream gears of the chain top and bottom), the timing will be in tact.

You can do it with the engine in the frame.
2 pieces of cardboard, one, with the outline of the clutch cover, holes for the bolts, keep them in order coming apart.
Same with the head cover, but there are 2 bolts there to be aware of. Left front, theres one upside down, its gotta be in the before the head cover goes back on & theres one in the center that wont come out of the head cover until you get the head cover out of the bike. If its not in the head cover when you put it back in, its not going in,

Others will be along,, YOull get thru this, go slow, ask before you guess..

Is it possible to get someone to weld on an extension to the plunger where you live?  This would delay the need to replace the chain for a long while.
