So the Savage it is...

So I smashed up my Sportster on the freeway last week, leaned into a pothole and got launched off he bike at 60mph. It took a while to convince my girlfriend to let me use her Savage for the trip to SoCal for the born free show. So I'll be smashing down I5 from sacramento to LA for the show, party, party, them cruise up scenic hwy 1, beach camp, then continue up hwy 1 for the rest of the trip back home to sac.

Anyone have experience with the savage on interstate 5 or done 1k miles in 4 days? The bike is pretty darn light in weight and I don't wanna get thrown around by cross or head wind. I'm 175lbs and probably 35lbs of gear. Other question is that the bike pins at 85mph and there's no tach and I doubt there's a rev limiter, probably be cruising at 80mph hrs at a time hoping to not hurt anything. Bike runs strong, a quick tune up and safety check and I'm good to go hopefully.

First I5 on any bike is mind numbing - hours and hours of boring straight road.

Big singles get pretty buzzy at those speeds, which makes your hands numb. To compound it, she has ape hangers which will likely amplify the problem. I'd just say that riding my S40 250 miles in a day is like riding my BMW 500 to 700 miles, and you're trying to do 4 of those days in a row!!! If possible, take the bike out and ride a 100 miles BEFORE your trip. Your enthusiasm may diminish.

Reply #5 - 06/07/12 at 20:24:57 no scenery on the 5, just straight get there fast kinda road. and every 100 miles you'll need to get gas and stretch a leg. there's a couple of stretches gas might not be that convenient. pac coast much better ride. be sure to have some oil with ya, going fast burns it.

More gas, more food, more to look at. 5 through the valley is a form punishment, 'though you do catch some impressive aromas as you pass the feed lots.

My wife rides the s40 now and we just did two 300 plus mile days back to back no problem. we were not speeding it so she burned no oil and was doing 140 miles between fill ups.

I would do 70 on a Savage all day, where as 80 certainly feels like pushing it. Then again I would say the same on my HD XL1200C.

As for crosswinds and getting blown around, I get blown around far more on the Sportster than the Savage. All has to do with the cross area that the wind has to catch. AKA how much wing area you have. The Sportster is taller and longer, so it has more surface to catch wind. The Savage is small and short, and I hardly notice wind/blow back when my sport bike riding brothern are whining every stop of the way.

So typically there are trade offs. I would say the Sportster is overall more interstate friendly. However the Savage gets blown around less. Both vibrate, but I noticed that the XL1200 (03, non rubber mounted) caused my hands to go numb while the Savage did not. My @$$ hurt much more on the Savage and started getting achy joints (I'm 22) from the compactness compared to the Sportster which I could gas up and keep going all day.

Sportster tracks a straight line better, Savage corners harder. All in all I think the two bikes go very well for swapping between because they share similar riding characteristics and styling. Both bikes you posted look absolutely awesome. Love the lost fender and apes on the Savage.

As for me 80 on the thumper is just too much for more than just passing. Ruins the fun. The baby sized gas tank, may be an issue, and at 80 you will be sucking it down. Lube the speedo cable.
