Trust me, it takes a while to get it running. So I am gratefull for the juice. Once I get it running, I need full choke for 20 secs or so.. then go to min choke... Once I am on the road/freeway it's fine on no choke. It was never like this before. I am going to try changing the plug.

On single cylinder 4 strokes, valve clearance issues are characterized by hard starting. I doubt that is the problem on a 4 yr old bike, but I wouldnt rule it out also.

I put it on an auto shut off trickle charger when I notice it doing that on start up

I was having the same "issue" and found out the problem wasn't the battery, starter, choke or fuel..........It was the OPERATOR! With full choke, I was also twisting the throttle wide open. Thanks to someone on this board, who is obviously much smarter than me, told me to to leave the throttle alone. Sure enough, the beast comes to life within a few seconds.

He thought it was a valve issue when he heard how it runs. And after taking things apart, the valves seem fine. Now he thinks it may be the cam chain tensioner. Should know in a day or two.

You have a guy looking at it. You aren't paying him to experiment on your bike are you?

We have LOTS and LOTS of issues each year caused by inexperienced Savage dealership technicians, so much so we keep a thread about in the Tech Section. Repairmen at dealerships come and go with the seasons and the one looking at your bike has OBVIOUSLY never dealt with a Savage before .....

Reply #12 - 05/23/12 at 11:48:58 well with 49k on it, you should look at the cam chain tensioner. clean the carb, change the plug, might be the jetting all depends on the mods you've done already.
