Rattle when I pull the clutch in
05/16/12 at 17:39:12

Hi fellow forum users! I've just registered with the site due to a strange problem with my bike.

First off, I ride a 1995 Savage with about 15,600 miles on it.
Oil, air filter and spark plug changed just before 15,000.

The last couple times I've ridden my Savage, I've noticed that when I pull in the clutch to shift, I get some kind of rattling noise. I've also noticed that the noise/rattle slows with wheel speed, rather than engine speed.
(As you can imagine, I'm a little worried about what might happen if I continue to ride it past the one trip I've made with the noise, so I haven't extensively tested to know when the noise happens exactly.)

It also may be more prevalent after warming up.

What kind of issue could this be? I know there is a common issue with the cam chain tensioner, but that continues when the bike is idling, and I *believe* my noise does not.

If you guys need more details, I can do a better test the next time I need to make a very short trip.

Thanks in advance!

Most likely the left side, but it was hard for me to tell.

Thanks. I'll check when I've got daylight.

I assume it's the huge nut on the first picture here?:

A 1/2 impact would be a really nice thing to have handy,

I had a similar rattle, and it was the cover over that pulley was loose. When you take that cover off to check the pulley, take note of which bolt goes where...they are not all the same length
