Heavy Rider Question
04/17/12 at 04:19:41

I have searched and read this and other forums and didn't see this explicitly addressed. I am in love with the sexiness of the Savage. I sat on one and it fits me well. My concern is how well it will move me. I am 5'10" and 320lbs. I have a short (29") inseam which is probably why it fit so well. I found one I like and would want to do the exhaust, air filter, and jet mods right away. I understand that helps with top speed and higher speed power. My questions are what happens to the bottom end with a guy my size? Will the bike move me with or without the mods? I don't plan on doing much highway driving, only when needed. Most of my riding will be in the suburbs and on 2 lane roads with a 45-55mph speed limit.

I would assume normal sized people riding 2 up would have similar weight on the bike. How does that work out?

I was 298 this morning and my bike hauls me around just fine.  I am about 6 foot, and I added forward controls, which helps with my longer legs.  I have no complaints.  Get on and ride.

Thank you for that info! I figured it would be fine. It's just the dealer and the mechanic both asked the same question as soon as they saw me; "Is this for YOU?" Just got me wondering is all.

It's actually better than a lot of bigger bikes... because of the strong low end torque...
No problem hauling you around at any legal speeds...
We have quite few 300lb+ members that have been riding here for years...
Wink...

Granted I'm at around 180#, but when I add over 100# of camping gear, clothes, computer and lots of water I still rolled down the road with all the acceleration and top end I would ever need. Could keep up with traffic (including the Sturgis crowd till I couldn't take the noise) and pass when I wanted to. The Sav is a stable and responsive bike no matter what we throw at it.

I am 5'6", weigh 304 lbs, and have a 26' inseam.  The odometer on my three year old Savage just turned 40,000 (It had 3,000 on it when I got it.).  That should tell you something.

Well, you all have made me feel comfortable with my decision. The problem is someone beat me to the dealer with a check. I am still searching for my Savage!

I am 6-1 was 450 my savage toted me just fine same application as you mentioned 45-55 commuter bike - now i am 350 and dropping and the bike is definitely peppier - but I just sold it and moved up to a Honda Shadow 750. I miss Suzi she never laid down on me or gave me any real problems - the Honda is very cold natured - just have to find the right coke settings and have patience with the warm up process.

Fear not! These bikes have been made for a long long time, and most have been ridden really gently, so there are lots of used ones around, often at great prices! (I got mine for $250!) I've seen lots of totally ridable Savages for under $1,000... It won't take you long!
