I always associate backfire w/ lean-ness.

For a start, (ez stuff 1st) loosen the drain screw at bottom of carb bowl,...see if fuel runs out
If not, turn petcock to "prime" for a minute, then see if fuel runs out
Then go from there.

I bought it used so I have not done mods but it does have a jardine on it year is 97 with 2460 miles no noise in the
Motor. I don't know what mods the previous owner did because she bought it used with the jardine already on it

Pretty hard to determine a problem w/out much detail.
Being that it was in storage, I'll assume clogged carb.

take 2 cans of carb cleaner and call us in the morning.   Cool

Does it turn over when you press the start button?
Does the light come on when you turn the key?
Are there any unusual sounds happening as you attempt to start it?

Along the lines of what Vers said, when was the last time you cleaned your carb? Do you have an inline fuel filter?

No inline fuel filter and I took the carb off tonight and it looked fine. So while I had it off I rejetted it because I didn't know if the previous owner did or not and they didn't when the put the jardine on. So now I figure why I got the carb off I might as well fix my oil leak.

I sure try to avoid adding variables when something is being difficult,.It was running before the backfire & shutdown,, I woulda found the problem & fixed that before I changed anything that could affect whether or not it will start,
So, was there much crap in the bowl? Did you check the passages in the carb?

Is the battery fully charged? Have you pulled the plug? Id spin it over w/o the plug & see if anything sounds wrong,
I cant remember if youve checked spark, Just because it sparks outside the cylinder doesnt mean it will once instaled, if the battery isnt fully charged, itll spin over & not spark,

Or, you could take out a HUGE life insurance policy on it & take it to a
craptasticanich.
