The hideous bulky key
11/01/11 at 15:57:56
So my bike has this hideous big black plastic key that has this built in round cap that flushes up against the key hole, perpindicular to the key itself. It makes the key ridiculously bulky and uncomfortable in my pocket.
Has anyone had a normal flat key cut? Does it cause problems being different? Would it be ok to get a normal key for this bike?
I live in the middle of nowhere and teach at a middle school in a small Texas town so I normally just leave the key in it all the time but I get worried some time some dbag might steal my key.

This round cap must be something the PO added... not standard issue.
Yank it off it iritates you.

Looks like it came from a bus depot locker.
Anyway, you can find the key code on the bike (it's on one or more of the locks) and get an ordinary flat one made.

My old atv used to have a key like that. Just cut that round stuff and make it look like a normal key. I always thought that round thing was so the user wouldn't get dirt or mud inside the key hole.

Versy, the round cap keeps moisture out of the ignition in rain. ATVs come with them a lot. Like you said, "Yank it off." Reminds me of the service station restroom key with a boat paddle attached so you don't lose it or steal it.

A question. Are there motorcycles that have the chip embedded in the key? If so, we may need to qualify our advice to modify them. A key for my car is about $80 at the dealer (with programming). I got one for $65 at my locksmith without the wait or the attitude.

We're talking about a budget bike designed more than 20 years ago. We're lucky it has digital ignition and a disk brake. So a chip embedded in the key? Mmmmmmmmm, I doubt it.

I wouldn't be leaving the key in my bike....not where I live, anyways. The bike would be gone in a flash.
I have just a regular flat key, and the 1 came with bike, with the plastic cover. No big round thing like that, though. I'm sure it's there to keep moisture out while riding. I never ride in the rain, so I don't need it.

Yeah, Drums i don't plan on riding when there is rain in the forecast so I won't be worried about cutting that crap off. I used to ride in FL many years ago and a freaking microburst tornado type thing blew across the road in a sudden thnder storm and took me off the road with it so I avoid rain now, I was scarred by that.
The HD keychain came from the PO too, lol. I thought it was ironic and I haven't found a better free replacement yet.

If you can slip that piece of rubber off intact I'll take it.. I broke the plastic piece off of my key, and I think that rubber sealer is kinda neat...

to answer one of your original questions- yes you can have a different key made. I took mine to the local locksmith and he made me a pair of keys for $5 each including cutting them.
