Serial_Numbers_Should_They_Match

Should the the serial number part of the VIN match the one on the engine?  Sounds like a dumb question, but I have an old Suzuki dirt bike that I bought new and the engine & frame numbers are different.

Seems to me you've answered your own question.
You bought it new, and numbers don't match.
I got a 71 honda and the numbers are close but don't match.

I read somewhere frames and engines were inspected separately and if one failed inspection, it would be removed. The other would then be matched to another so the numbers shouldn't be off by much.

not sure about your bike but I know for a fact that old honda's never matched and if they did match, something was probably fishy about that.

I have a question... I have a 1996 Suzuki Savage and the VIN on the frame and the serial number on the engine do not match... In NY I have been told this isn't legal... Any suggestions???

They are sold that way all over, including NY.
Go to any suzuki dealer and check it out, none of them match.
The engine number could also be on the registration.

In N.Y. all are registered by the VIN number ,and if someone told you it was illegal he's wrong ! (and he was probably a Harley guy).
In FLA. back in the 70's bikes were registered by engine number ,someone stealing your bike (usually for the motor) would have to rebuild his totally ,needing to keep his center cases which helped deter thievery.
