Good exhaust seal?
10/25/11 at 18:05:39
I tried a search but the search is broken at the moment... anyone know of a good way to seal the header to muffler (aside from Serowbots can method and using muffler seal paste crap)? My pipe that needs a good seal is 1 5/8th inches (1.65)..
I had a broken clamp and I ordered a new one, but I'm not sure if it's gonna seal correctly..

You have to size the mating parts so they fit so tightly it is hard to get them to slide together. Then use one of the very heavy-duty exhaust clamps that are powerful enough to literally squeeze the joint together. Done properly you are actually crushing (swaging?) the pipes in the joint together.
You might consider some of these:

If the joint is fitting loosely, no amount of "muffler seal paste crap" will hold very long.

you may want to consider an adapter so that each side fits snuggly, would require two heavy duty clamps but would ensure proper fit.

Gyrobob I already ordered 2 of those Cobra T clamps earlier today, I'm hoping they're strong enough and do the trick...

Great. I hope they work too. They look like pretty tough pieces.
I still think the key is to have all the pieces fit as precisely as possible first. Then all the clamp has to do is to keep them joined up. The clamp can not actually be part of the structure,.. it's not designed to support the load, just keep it all tight.
I'm considering welding mine together on the double RYCA build. Then I'd have just one piece that would not come apart. It would be a little cumbersome if I had to get to something inboard of the muffler or pipe, but at least it would stay together.

I don't even know how I got this leak and I can't find a single thing wrong with the pipe..so I'm assuming the clamp provided had a little issue.. its the Raask dragpipe so the heat shield keeps it from being wielded or I'd just do that, I wish it was all 1 piece like he used to make them.. but then again, I do have a 60mm header pipe now that I can use with another muffler
If the clamps don't work I guess I'm getting a muffler expander and re-clamp..

cut enough slits in the muffler end, so that the clamp can cinch down... that's the key... Slits!...
It's all about the slits...

Did you use the clamp that Raask sent with the system? It is a very cheap clamp and didn't put much clamping power on the joint before it broke. I replaced it with a better clamp I got at the dealer, reefed on it, let it heat and cool a couple of times then reefed on it again and have had no problems since.

Serowbot the slits on it are long enough already, I'm throwing an extra clamp over those too just in case.. man I have some crazy exhaust problems..
If I end up getting that pipe expander then I can just throw in my steel can and double clamp.. I'm never ever using muffler seal paste crap again, last time I used it I let it cure for over a day and my old Dyna muffler sounds like a tambourine when you shake it.

Check the diameter specs on any clamp you might buy.

I have the right diameter, I'm just hoping the Cobra T clamps are wide enough...

Arteacher did you tighten it down hard while the pipe was hot? Or just tighten, heat up, cool down, tighten, heat up, cool down, tighten...
