Battery life?
10/23/11 at 16:09:39
Alright, some simple questions:
How long does the typical savage battery last?
Is a walmart battery worth it?
What is are the bettery batteries on the market for the savage?
Do most riders pull the battery over the winter and put it on trickle charge?
I live in the northeast and just let my bike sit for a week and half and the battery is dead. I cannot tell how old the battery is but I can see that it is a walmart brand.
Thanks!

Big Crank on-line ... Batteries Plus local...
Trickle..
Wallyworld battery is good for 2 to 3 years if your lucky... plus.. the drain tube is usually on the wrong side...
and the answer to everything is 42...

Any battery in good condition would survive 10 days - so yours was not so good.
Big Crank is an low-maintenance AGM battery, typically loses 3% or less charge per month, so it can usually survive the winter and startup in the spring without attention.
But a smart charger like Battery Tender Jr. will give any battery the best lifetime, and many of BTJ bundles include a set of ring terminal cables to be installed on battery to make it easy to charge.
I rode my used bike for a year before a charging cable end flopped out from under the seat - hey whaddya know.

Get a lithium ion battery. They cost a lot, but they last so much longer you only have to buy 1/3 as many batteries. Plus they hold their charge for months, rather than days. Plus they are WAAYY smaller and lighter. If you ordered one, when the box came and you opened it up, you'd think they made a mistake and sent you a moped battery.

The battery I pulled out of my stock 2005 (previous owner only put 4k miles on it) had an Ever Start Wal-Mart battery too... I couldn't find the drain tube.. I put in a Big Crank.. glad I pulled it out, I wasn't having any problems with it but it has no visible liquid in it...

The life of a battery is dependent on a few things. & I have proved to not be dependable a few times. I have left keys on, left them uncharged for months & let them run low on water. I have been the single most battery life shortening influence & my batteries have responded appropriately by Dying,, NOt to say that all batteries will give great performance if you dont screw them up, some fail no matter how nice you are to them. BUt, given a choice, Ill take a Big Crank.

Great info!
I am told by my local auto parts store that the installed battery I have is not the proper battery!
I have a ES14L-A2 from walmart ($ 38.00).
The proper battery cost $ 80.00!
Is this a rip off?

If their both lead acid batteries, yes, big rippoff. But I would hope the $80 one is an AGM battery.
WM doesn't make batteries. They are all made by one of about 3 major battery Manufactures.
Even lead acid batteries can last a mighty long time (like 10 yrs) if they are never run dead, and never run dry, and kept full charged all the time. But that seldom ever happens,....or is not practical to do, therefore we buy new batteries every 3-6 yrs.

The only difference between the proper battery & the one you have is the vent is on the wrong end. Oh, and $42 in your pocket!

Yes, it is...
$40 should buy you a wet cell lead acid battery...
$80 buys a glass mat gel cell...
For my money,.. the $80 is well spent on a glass mat... longer lasting, no maintenance,...

I got mine at Batteries Plus for around $80. 1st one lasted 5 years with trickle charge in winter. Just put in a new one this past winter.

Ever Start (Wal-Mart) YB14L-A2 is what I pulled from my 2005, and I replaced it with a Big Crank:

GyroBob,
Don't you need to change some stuff with the charging circuit to go with a Lithium battery? Or is that only if you go LiPo?
