Waving.
09/20/11 at 12:30:06

This is from  “Rider’s Quest” Magazine
Proper motorcycle etiquette suggests that bikers wave to each other.
It’s an age old tradition that demonstrates recognition and respect for one’s fellow rider.
It’s an acknowledgement of being a part of an exclusive group of adventurous individuals.
It’s the thing to do, however having said that-
it is not always done..

We ask Why???
Here are 5 reasons why Harley riders
don’t wave back

Leather and studs make it too heavy to raise arm
.
Afraid to let go of handlebars because they might vibrate off

Angry because just took out second mortgage to pay for tax on new Harley

Can’t  tell if other riders are waving or just reaching to cover their ears like everyone else.

They are just too tired after spending hours polishing all that chrome to lift their arms.

Here are 5 reasons why Gold Wing Riders
don’t wave back
Wasn’t sure whether other rider was waving or making obscene gesture

Arthritis makes it difficult to raise arm

Afraid of frostbite if hand leaves heated grip

Couldn’t see thru the tinted windshield

Couldn’t see the other rider on such a small bike

Here are 5 reasons why Sport Bike Riders
                       don’t wave back
They are too young to know they are supposed to

Other rider wasn’t wearing cool enough gear

If they stuck their arm out going that fast, they’d rip it out of the socket

Their skin tight full ballistic leather suits prevent any position other than fetal

They actually did wave, but were going too fast for anyone to see it.

Awe,,,summer….it’s great isn’t it……

So true...recent personal experience, our office is supporting a breast cancer fundraising effort by the local firefighters by purchasing bright pink shirts that have a firefighters fighting breast cancer logo on the back. I've been wearing that shirt to/from work every Friday even when I ride the bike and every time I wear that shirt I get maybe 1/2 the waves I normally get from other riders. (one of these days I will get someone to take a pic of me in that shirt on my bike so I can post it in the ride for skatnbc thread)  Smiley

Top 5 reasons a savage won't wave back...
1. Too busy wicking it  Grin
2. Gotta put in prime   Roll Eyes
3. I'm checking my hot oil level.   Huh
4. The other rider is a HD, GW or BMW, they don't wave anyway.
5. I'm reachin' in my pocket for my SKAT wrist band.   Cool

Top 5 reasons WD doesn't wave back...

1. Other bike is too clean, so the rider is a phony.
2. You are wearing a full face helmet on a cruiser.
3. Your gear isn't broken in, so you are a phony or too new to bother with.
4. You look like a lawyer, cop, banker, accountant, etc.
5. Don't give a s*** one way or the other about the silly waving to other bikes thing.

The experience I mentioned awhile back under "Traumatized" continues to hold up. H-Ds waive back at least 90% of the time, GWs & rockets at least 75%. BMWs, not so much, as in <10%. I wave at the latter just to be an irritant.

Car joke for the few of you who haven't heard it: Do you know the difference between a BMW and a rose/cactus (regional)?  With a rose/cactus, the prick is on the outside.

Vers, you forgot a couple why Savage riders don't wave.

1. Still trying to find 6th gear.

2. Watching the odometer waiting to switch to reserve.

3. Having so much fun your in your own lil world...lol

Reasons I don't wave unless I'm waved to first:

1. I'm wearing a full face on a cruiser so I can tuck past 16 wheelers on the highway (I'm so hard core I don't have a windshield!!) so I don't get blown off the road

2. You probably think I'm on a chinese bike

3. You probably have no respect for me or my bike even though we're both riders, but your girl on the back still waves to me Smiley

4. If you're on a GW or HD and you wave first, I'll wave back I'm cool like that

I'll even wave to a guy on a scooter if he waves.. I have respect for all riders..

If its 2 wheels (or even 3, since I have been seeing a few trikes lately) I wave.  Don't give a crap whether they wave back or not.  Only time I don't wave is if I physically can't (need my hand on the clutch or whatever...)

I definitely always wave.  I even waved at a scooter this morning.  I figured I made his day and he felt like a real biker for a few seconds, lol.

I'm pretty much the same way, although in heavy traffic, like on the freeway through Portland and such, I won't risk it usually.  Need to be ready to dodge the idiots! Shocked

All of the weekend warrior want-a-bee's won't ride once the temps get below 60  Grin I get waves no matter if I'm on the S40 or my Burgman around where I live. I wave to everyone on 2 or 3 wheels no matter what brand or type.

Just a quick note.  I have been stranded on the side of the road twice in the last few years (dead battery on an S50, and one on my Savage with I don't know what, bad kickstand switch maybe.)  In both cases, the people who stopped to help me were riding Harleys.

Most people wave where I am but there aint too many riders, mostly luxury cars, on weekends you see the same guys take the HD out for their 5 miles ride and make sure to park in front of everyone with it. You know those guys, who put 200 miles a year on the bike, most of those guys dont even know they're supposed to wave I guess. There's this little old lady though on her pink scooter when I drive to and from work, she's a trooper, always waves at me and I make sure to always wave back.
