Help!!!
08/29/11 at 13:11:45

hey guys im kinda new to the suzuki world and i need a lil help.. i recently swapt a 4wheeler for a savage, its an 86, not in too bad a shape. im able to get it running but not very good at all. iv opened the exhaust up so she flows a lil better and i put bigger jets in it, but she ran the same way before i changed any thing. when i get her started up she has a hard time sitting at idle and when you rev her up she spits and back fires like shes getting way to much fuel. so i put factory jets back in her. no change. iv cleaned the carb 2 or 3 times now to make sure no dirt was in it and she is clean! im just hoping some one can point me in a direction.. i wanna ride this bike but i cant figure out whats wrong with her..

chuck move this over to the rubber side down and you'll get more responses. Check the air/mix screw setting too.
Also, just for giggles put the petcock on Prime and try it. If it runs better I'd buy a raptor petcock to replace the stock vacuum one...

What jets did you try?

Opened up the exhaust... How?

stage 1 jets for a '95 and on are probably smaller than a stock '86 jets.

Do you know the numbers are on the stage 1 jets?

the large jet was a 150 i believe and the smaller one was a 50. the kit i got was a cheap one off ebay and it had a sheet with instuctions with it and it also came with a paper that suggested a few other mods like tweeking with the idle screw by removing the plug that covers it and the white spacer mod.. have you heard of that one before??

Well, if the guy actually knew what he was doing, he wouldn't have sold you that kit cause it's the wrong one.  You got a stage 1 kit for a '95 on like I said before.  The main jet in the '86 is a 155.  You need a 160 or 165.

Buy the jets yourself.  Get a range of 5 jets 160 thru 170.  Read up on how to rejet.

After all you've done to the carb, you think maybe the problem may have nothing to do w/ the carb ? Spittin back thru the carb ?? I think I'd be checkin the valve timing, before I did anymore hackin.

Take an original jet to any bike shop, not necessarily a dealer, and tell them you want one size bigger. Go to the tech section and read up on carbs before you go messing around. I agree it could be a timing problem, but it needs to be right to find out.

For jets, I highly recommend Nichecycle.

Check out Serowbots thread in the tech section for beginners carb tuning.

Good luck!
