air filter, carb, and exhaust - tell us the tune!
07/18/11 at 08:25:44

Maybe this already exists but I was thinking it would be awesome to start a running list and then maybe move it to the technical section of how people's carbs and exhaust and all that are set up. I can't do it properly because I can't remember my jet size (doh!) but I think this might help a lot of people get a good starting point for themselves.

Answer these questions.

Is your bike well tuned?

Year:
Mileage:
Air Filter:
Petcock:
Main Jet:
Pilot Jet:
White Spacer Mod:
# Turns on air/fuel mixture screw:
Exhaust:
Elevation:
Other Carb Mods:
Backfire:
Gas Mileage:
Smooth accel:
Spark plug color:

(thanks guys we're building a good list!)
Any thing else relevant?

How about a field to determine how well the bike is jetted? how/when it backfires, fuel economy, color of spark plug, if it sputters/hesitates/bogs down.

The stock getting changed between some years of the bike, so that might also be relevant.

So, with  that note, here is mine with the added note that it isn't just right yet:

Air Filter: cheap-o cone off ebay
Petcock: raptor
Main Jet: 152.5 (i think)
Pilot Jet: 52.5
White Spacer Mod: none (yet)
# Turns on air/fuel mixture screw: 2.5 (i think)
Exhaust: jardine
Elevation: ~1000ft
Other Carb Mods: PVC street corner pipe intake
Backfiring: all the friggin time  Angry (especially downshifting, but also when shifting up, and a poof on shutdown)
gas mileage: 41 to 46 mpg
pulls: smooth to 3/4, no power from 3/4 to WOT
perfected: no. not even ballpark.  Undecided

Here's mine:
K&N slab filter in stock box.
Raask Exhaust with baffle in.
150 main jet.
55 pilot jet with holes.
Dial-a-Jet installed set to one stop on the lean side of middle. (will set it to middle when it gets colder).
2/3 white spacer mod.
Mixture screw 2 turns out.
49 mpg mixed city and highway.
Occasional pops while down shifting, none at shut off.
No performance issues- it goes like a scalded cat.
Top speed 87 indicated mph with a 250 lb rider, windshield, and wide bags.

Here's mine:

'06 S40, 15,700 miles
Stock muffler with baffle removed
Extended plunger @ 12,000 miles
150 main, 52.5 pilot with bleed holes, 2/3 spacer
Mixture screw 2 1/4 turns out
Open airbox with stock filter
Smooth acceleration from idle to WOT
Occasional poof on shutdown, frequent pops on upshift
Mainly jake brake rumble on decel with bangs when dropping to a little over 3,000 rpm
Light tan plug and exhaust color
Starts without throttle and choke down to about 60 degrees when cold
41-55 mpg depending on throttle hand  Cheesy
Oil: Rotella T6 5W-40 Full Synthetic
Oil usage about a 1/4 pt for 1,000 miles in summer heat, less in winter
Riding style: Heavy throttle hand, fast, but no "stunts" like wheelies and such
Top speed indicated 95mph which is about 93.5 on GPS device
Driver weight 200lbs, with occasional 105lbs wife on back, which only seems to drop gas mileage slightly
Front tire stock IRC
Rear tire Dunlop K555, 4,000 miles maximum life

And mine:
'87 Savage, 20,000 miles.
Air Filter: OE
HD muffler (torpedo) with baffle knocked out.
Petcock: OE, on prime, vacuum plugged.
Jets: OE
White spacer: OE
Mixture screw: 2 turns out.
54.6 mpg
Some gurgling on decel.
"poof" on shutdown.
Lack of power top to bottom, due to used head, and running over the big rock. Don't know why my mileage is as good as it is, but I'd gladly trade a few mpg for a return of power. ( I'm thinking it's only a matter of time, and I'll be looking for a new motor, or a new bike. )

What we are forgetting in this talk about "well-tuned" is that tuning is a "dynamic quality" as described by Robert Pirzig in Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance.  Something is constantly changing, and even when we get the "static quality" "perfect(?)" there are many things happening to change the so-called perfection.  There is no once-and-done in physics, or in life.

Very true, that would be why I started it off saying that it would be a good starting off point for other to use as an example. After reading it though, this might also serve as a memory for people (like myself after I find out) of what stats they have on their bike exactly. If I don't write it somewhere, I'll never remember my jets, and # of turns.

main 150
pilot 55 no bleed holes
2/3 white spacer
raptor
mix screw out 1.5
