It just bugs me that it's so close...  & I agree with that, but I wonder if a wrap doesnt just carry that heat closer.. How much cooler is the outside of the wrap than the raw header? Id rather see a thin metal shield mounted so that it stands between header & engine, not mounted to the header.

Just adding my 2 cents, the previous owner of my bike painted the header with cheap high temp paint and it had some nasty scratches. Wrap is a good solution in my case.

Ditto.  My header looked like death when I got the bike, but it was mechanically sound, so I wrapped it.  I dig the look, but I was one of those weirdo's that knew the first rat-rod I saw was finished just the way it was, while my friends were asking the owner when it was getting into the paint booth.....

It does keep the heat down a bit against the leg too, so that's a plus.

Good news:
-- You are in vogue with a certain crowd
-- Reduces the tinny sound of thin headers (Savage header weighs a ton because it is THREE layers of steel,.. not tinny sounding)
-- Don't have to clean off blue stains
-- Keeps the exhaust gasses hotter so they are less viscous as they travel through the tubing and muffler.  This can give a HP and mileage increase to the tune of a % or so.  (.4 horsepower on an LS650)

Bad news:
-- looks tacky
-- costs money
-- takes hours to install properly the first time you do it
-- requires maintenance,.. they loosen and get dirty
-- rusts the header sooner
-- weighs more

Looks like I need to add another bad news item,.. the header sweater gets stained during oil changes.
