I aak because mine stops where the upper and lower meet...

Hi Edgar. If I understand correctly...
I used a 36" pipe and it only went in MAYBE 2/3rds of it's total length. When you feel it bottom out, gently apply a little pressure and slowly turn the pipe until you feel it seat.
Also...giving credit where credit is due, it was Motobuddah's info...I just figured out a way to use it without welding.

One thing you might consider is that these seals usually have a max life of several years, or maybe 15,000 miles, give or take 10,000. Of course there are bikes that go for decades with no leaks, and some that leak in the first week, but, the point is, if your bike has got some miles and years on it, the seals may not have a lot of life left. Taking the forks off the bike is 80% of the labor involved in replacing seals, so it is a reasonable idea to go ahead and replace the seals while you have it apart.

One other tip, you can make a seal installation tool for about $3 using one 2' length of PVC from Home Depot or Lowe's. See Double Ryca build, reply #35. http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1304722902/35#35

A little update, motobudha's/mpnoffi's tool worked fine, for anyone else who doesn't have access to welding, I applied jb weld to the 5/8 bolts on each side of the tube, let it settle over night and it held perfect.

But now I have another question or you guys, I got the bottom bolt off and in this post

It says that you can easily seperate the two tubes from eachother after removing the seals, little metal wire things, and that bolt of course. But they aren't separating for me...what did I miss??

Edgar,, think man,, think!, YOu didnt see anything there that made you think?? I would NEVER let someone like that show me anything.. I dont trust those guys, not One little bit,, I strongly suspect they are either straight up Aliens from outer space or hybrids from them,, their hands are WAY too clean to be real mechanics.

They don't say "easily". They say "basically".
"At this point, you can basically pull the lower and upper legs apart and they will pull out the seals with out any damage. "
You gotta put some SLAM into it. Grab upper and lower as in picture of the Aliens. Push together and then YANK them apart. Assuming you got the clip out, they will separate. May take a few runs at it, but it will do the job.
