handlebar compression release lever
06/16/11 at 06:35:33

Racing dirt bikes such as the Honda XR650R have a manual compression-release lever mounted on top of clutch lever. Very clever. Has anyone tried to fit one of these, or something like it, on a Savage or Ryca? One problem is that most dirt bikes have 7/8" bars while our's is 1".

If I remember correctly XS650 Yamahas had a decompression lever that was also the start button. But I could be having a senior moment.

Id want a bar mounted decomp If I had a kick start. The simplest, most elegant decomp Ive seen was a simple lever on the head. Cant remember who has it,,
The decomp is only needed for a split second, to make sure the starter can get the engines mass swingin so it could push thru compression & not overload the starter & its gears. If the piston is down & going into the exhaust stroke, the decomp isnt even needed,, but, its there, just in case its coming up on compression,

But how do you hold the clutch in and hold the compression release open both with your left hand at the same time?

You dont, you flip the lever to trap an exhaust valve partially open & when the cam opens the exhaust valves fully open it flops back,

You hold the clutch with three fingers and the decomp with the index.

Don't Savage's have an Auto-Decompression cable?  I remember seeing something resembling it in the 86-88 book...

Grin... Yes they do...
Some of us old farts want manual everything...
I have no idea why,... but I find the idea of triggering it manually, appealing...
