? about tires
06/08/11 at 19:34:00

I'm getting ready to order another ME 880 140/80-15 for my bike and a similar tire caught my eye. It's a D404 dunlop that is almost 60 bucks cheaper. Anyone have this style of tire? I love the metzlers as I had them on my magna for YEARS but times are tough and my wallet is dangerously light...

... almost everybody has that tire... it's a fine tire... just not quite as good as a Metz, if you're looking for the mostest, bestest...
Wink...

... for me,... a Metzler is going to last so long, it's going to heatcheck and dry out, before I can wear it out...

If youre not running 3+k miles a year. Id stay with the Dunlop. Others may suggest a higher number/year.. lets see..

I've got about 1200 miles on my D404.  Love it!

Pirelli 66 Route the highest rated tire,Also give a better ride over the bumps.I put them on my Suzuki 1500 which is a good riding bike but even better with the Pirelli's.

Seems like somebody here had Avon Venom's but can't remember who.  Usually high dollar, but I've never heard anything bad about them.

I got over 40K miles out of the D404s on my Vulcan, and they still had good tread when I sold the bike (against my will).

I wouldn't run another Avon if it was free and came with a year of free fuel. Gangster whitewall on another Vulcan was bald within 6 months.

I've got an old style Dunlop Qualifier to go on the rear of my Savage. Lisa's Intruder shipped with the same model tire OEM, she had me change it out a couple years ago. Bike is a 96... still had tread, still flexible (kinda).

i have a avon road runner in the back and the only reason i am changing it .is because  i have some weather cracks on the sides ...but the treat is almost new ......how bad is to have weather marks in the side of your tire ???? Cheesy

If you can see sidewall cords, replace the tire. Otherwise run it. Modern tires check worse than real rubber ones did, the circa 1968 tires on my 49 Dodge rims are in better shape than the circa 2001 ChengShin on my Savage... Angry For that matter, the stock, from the factory 1949 issue spare isn't checked at all, don't think it has ever been out of the underbed carrier...
