I don't really know screwdrivers by size numbers, but those kinda look like jewelers' size drivers.  You'll likely need something a little bigger if that's so.

I got by without so far, but I haven't run into any real stubborn screws either.  My method was to find a standard Phillips that comes close to fitting, and apply gentle pressure to loosen, while tapping the end of the handle with a hammer.  Kinda a "poor mans impact driver".  The correct drivers will work better though, I'm sure.

You need a #1, #2 and #3 to cover all situations. #2 is the most used. The ones you mention look like minature screwdrivers, you want standard size. Take a look at this site, at least it will give you some idea.

Am I missing something? You're gonna need more than a couple screwdrivers to take your bike apart. There's gonna be some wrenches and sockets and other stuff involved too.

Hey Drums, you are correct about needing other tools.  The issue in this thread is that regular Phillips head screw drivers often are not very effective on the type screw heads found on Japanese motorcycles.  After you booger up a few, the value of the JIS-specific tools will be clearer to you.  The link provided by Mr. Hyde will land a set on your front porch faster than you can type!

FWIW....

For working on these bikes, I now consider #1 and #2 JIS screwdrivers to be necessities.  I also have a #3 JIS screwdriver, but consider this a "nice to have" item only, since a #3 Phillips seems to work decently well in this application.

IHTH someone!

Will an impact driver with a philips head work?  I've never used an impact driver before.

Yep.

And, if you happen to find a source for JIS impact bits, please share!

TIA!

Interesting.....but thes bits in the link are considerably longer than the standard Phillips impact bits I've got in my toolbox.  One wonders if they are meant to be used as impact bits.

Yea,, hat a point, but,

Id give them a shot,, Might lose some torque along the length,, specially on that long skinny thing.. but, the screws are pretty soft,, I expect the impct would deliver enough torque thru those tips to mess a screw up,, or bust it out,

Good point.  The effect of the "impact" would be lessened by the torque being absorbed by the springiness of the long shaft.  The shock effect of the impact driver is largest when the distance between the impact tool and the stuck screw is the shortest.
